Garmin Edge Bike Computers: Navigation, Training and Safety for Every Ride
Garmin Edge is the most widely used family of GPS bike computers in the world, and the current lineup covers every kind of rider: the button-driven Edge 540 and touchscreen Edge 840 for riders training toward a goal, the brighter compact Edge 550 and 850 launched in September 2025, the purpose-built Edge MTB for mountain bikers, the big-screen Edge Explore 2 for touring and eBike riders, the solar-charging Edge 1040 Solar with up to 100 hours of battery, and the flagship Edge 1050 with the brightest, highest-resolution display Garmin has ever put on a bike.
Every Edge on this page runs Garmin's cycling-specific TopoActive maps with turn-by-turn directions, ClimbPro climb profiles, Trendline popularity routing built from billions of miles of rider data, and the safety features Garmin is known for: incident detection, LiveTrack, GroupRide messaging and full compatibility with Varia rearview radar and smart lights. The differences come down to screen size and brightness, touchscreen versus buttons, battery life, solar charging, and how deep the training analytics go.
At DiveCatalog.com we carry the full current Edge lineup as an authorized Garmin dealer, along with the Varia radar and lights, speed and cadence sensors, mounts, power packs and silicone cases that complete the setup. Every unit is genuine, ships with the full Garmin warranty, and leaves our Irvine, California warehouse fast.

The Garmin Edge Lineup in Detail
Edge 540 and Edge 840: The Training Workhorses
Launched in April 2023, the Edge 540 and Edge 840 share a 2.6-inch 246 x 322 color transflective display that stays readable in direct sun, multi-band GNSS for accurate tracking under tree cover and in cities, and up to 26 hours of battery in demanding use or 42 hours in battery saver. Both carry Garmin's full training suite: training status, real-time stamina, Power Guide pacing, Cycling Ability analysis, Course Demands, VO2 max, recovery advisor, event-specific daily suggested workouts and Garmin Coach plans. Maps are TopoActive cycling maps with integrated Trailforks trail data, ClimbPro, Trendline popularity routing and a Wi-Fi map manager.
The difference is control and storage. The Edge 540 is button-only with 16 GB, which many riders prefer with winter gloves or in rain. The Edge 840 adds a touchscreen alongside the buttons, 32 GB, on-device course creation and on-device location search. The Edge 840 Solar adds a Power Glass lens that extends battery to 32 hours in demanding use and up to 60 hours in battery saver, gaining up to 25 minutes per hour of daytime riding.
Edge 550 and Edge 850: Brighter, Smarter Compact Computers (September 2025)
Garmin calls the Edge 550 and Edge 850 its brightest and smartest compact cycling computers. The 2.7-inch 420 x 600 display is a major step up in brightness and resolution over the 540 and 840, and both units record at 5 Hz for precise tracking through fast corners and descents, with dedicated enduro and downhill profiles, timing gates and gear ratio analysis. New smart fueling reminders tell you when to eat and drink based on your effort. Training features match the 540 and 840 (stamina, Power Guide, Cycling Ability, Course Demands, adaptive Garmin Cycling Coach plans), and GroupRide adds in-ride data comparisons alongside rider-to-rider messaging and incident alerts. Both are rated for up to 12 hours in demanding use and 36 hours in battery saver.
The Edge 550 is button-only with 32 GB. The Edge 850 adds a touchscreen, a built-in speaker for audible navigation and workout prompts, an integrated digital bike bell, Garmin Pay contactless payments, on-device course creation and 64 GB of storage.
Edge MTB: Garmin's First Bike Computer Built for Mountain Bikers (June 2025)
The Edge MTB is small, light and tough: 58 grams, a 2.13-inch display behind Corning Gorilla Glass, seven rugged buttons and no touchscreen to misfire in mud or gloves. It was the first bike computer in its class with 5 Hz GPS recording, so your line through technical sections is captured accurately. TopoActive maps include worldwide Trailforks trail data with an enhanced ForkSight mode that shows trail names and options at every fork, and MTB Dynamics tracks jump count, jump distance and hang time while Grit rates trail difficulty and Flow scores how smoothly you rode it. Enduro, downhill and e-enduro profiles, timing gates, incident detection with off-road detection, and a purpose-built MTB mount plus a top-tube mount in the box round it out. Battery is rated at 14 hours in demanding use and 26 hours in battery saver.
Edge Explore 2: Big-Screen Navigation for Touring and eBikes
If you ride to explore rather than to train, the Edge Explore 2 is the easiest Edge to live with. A 3-inch 240 x 400 touchscreen, TopoActive maps with turn-by-turn directions, off-course recalculation, ClimbPro, on-device course creation and location search, and Trendline routing that steers you onto the roads and paths other cyclists prefer. It has a dedicated eBike status screen with smart range routing, and the Power Mount bundle keeps it charged from a compatible eBike battery. Safety features are complete: incident detection, LiveTrack, Group LiveTrack, GroupRide messaging, bike alarm and Varia compatibility. Battery is rated at 16 hours in demanding use and 24 hours in battery saver. It uses GPS, GLONASS and Galileo (not multi-band) and skips Wi-Fi and the deep training analytics of the numbered models, which is exactly why it is the most approachable Edge.
Edge 1040 Solar: Up to 100 Hours on the Sun
The Edge 1040 Solar pairs a 3.5-inch 282 x 470 transflective display with a Power Glass solar lens, and the result is the longest battery in the lineup: up to 45 hours in demanding use and up to 100 hours in battery saver, with solar adding up to 42 minutes per hour of daytime riding. It carries multi-band GNSS, 64 GB of storage, TopoActive maps with Trailforks data, Wi-Fi map manager, on-device course creation, and the full training suite including stamina, Power Guide, Cycling Ability and MTB Dynamics. Garmin positions it as the computer for riders who want to ride longer, explore farther and train harder, and it is the natural choice for bikepacking, gravel ultras and multi-day events where charging is uncertain.
Edge 1050: The Brightest, Smartest Edge Ever Made (June 2024)
The Edge 1050 is Garmin's flagship. Its 3.5-inch 480 x 800 liquid crystal display is the brightest and highest-resolution screen on any Edge, controlled by touch and all-metal buttons. A built-in speaker delivers navigation and workout prompts and doubles as a digital bike bell, Garmin Pay handles mid-ride coffee stops, and 5 Hz recording captures every corner. ClimbPro now shows nearby climbs directly on the map, Power Guide accounts for wind and altitude acclimation, and GroupRide adds in-ride leaderboards and data comparisons to messaging and incident alerts. Smart fueling, gear ratio analysis, timing gates, real-time weather maps, Wi-Fi, 64 GB and multi-band GNSS complete the package. Battery is rated at 20 hours in demanding use and 60 hours in battery saver. If you want the best screen and the most connected ride experience, this is it.
Garmin Edge Features Explained
ClimbPro shows the remaining distance, ascent and grade of each climb on your route so you can pace your effort. On the Edge 850 and 1050 it also surfaces nearby climbs on the map while free riding.
Real-time stamina estimates how much you have left in the tank during a ride, so you can decide whether to attack the next climb or sit in.
Power Guide recommends power targets for each section of a course. On the Edge 1050 it also factors in wind, your current stamina and altitude acclimation.
Cycling Ability and Course Demands classify your strengths as a cyclist and compare them to what a specific course will ask of you, so training can target the gaps.
Multi-band GNSS uses two frequency bands from each satellite system for stronger tracking in tree cover, canyons and dense cities. Built into every current Edge except the Explore 2.
Trailforks and ForkSight put worldwide trail data on the map and show trail names and options as you approach a junction. MTB Dynamics adds jump count, distance and hang time plus Grit and Flow scores on the Edge MTB, 1040 Solar and 1050.
Incident detection and LiveTrack automatically send your location to emergency contacts after an on- or off-road incident and let family follow your ride in real time (a paired smartphone is required).
GroupRide shares rider-to-rider messages, live locations and incident alerts within your group, with in-ride data comparisons and leaderboards on the newest models.
Varia compatibility means your Edge displays approaching vehicles from a Varia rearview radar and controls Varia smart lights and cameras. Garmin's phrase is "see and be seen."

Frequently Asked Questions: Garmin Edge Bike Computers
What is the difference between the Garmin Edge 540 and Edge 840?
They share the same 2.6-inch display, multi-band GNSS, maps, training features and 26 hour battery. The Edge 840 adds a touchscreen (in addition to buttons), 32 GB of storage instead of 16 GB, on-device course creation and on-device location search. Choose the 540 if you prefer buttons for gloves and weather; choose the 840 if you want to build routes on the device and tap through menus.
Should I buy the Edge 550 or 850 instead of the 540 or 840?
The 550 and 850 (September 2025) have a much brighter 2.7-inch 420 x 600 display, 5 Hz recording, smart fueling alerts, gear ratio analysis and the newest GroupRide features. The trade-off is battery: 12 hours in demanding use versus 26 hours on the 540 and 840. If you ride long days away from a charger, the 540, 840 or 840 Solar still make sense; if screen quality and the newest features matter more, go 550 or 850.
Edge 1040 Solar or Edge 1050?
Same 3.5-inch size, different priorities. The 1040 Solar is about endurance: up to 45 hours in demanding use and 100 hours in battery saver with solar charging. The 1050 is about the experience: the brightest and sharpest Edge display, a speaker with a built-in bike bell, Garmin Pay and the most advanced GroupRide features, with 20 hours in demanding use. Ultra-distance and bikepacking riders usually pick the 1040 Solar; everyone else usually picks the 1050.
Do Garmin Edge computers come with maps?
Yes. Every current Edge ships with preloaded Garmin TopoActive cycling maps and turn-by-turn directions. The 540, 840, 550, 850, MTB, 1040 Solar and 1050 also include integrated Trailforks trail data, and most models let you add more maps over Wi-Fi.
Which Edge is best for mountain biking?
The Edge MTB was designed specifically for it: 58 grams, Gorilla Glass, rugged buttons, 5 Hz GPS, enhanced ForkSight trail navigation, MTB Dynamics and enduro and downhill profiles. If you split time between road and trail, the 840, 850, 1040 Solar and 1050 also carry Trailforks data and MTB Dynamics.
Which Edge is best for an eBike or touring?
The Edge Explore 2. It has the largest touchscreen in the compact class, a dedicated eBike status page with smart range routing, and an optional Power Mount that draws power from a compatible eBike battery so you never charge it separately.
Does the Edge work with Varia radar?
Yes. Every current Edge pairs with Varia rearview radar, radar cameras, smart headlights and tail lights, showing approaching vehicles on screen and controlling the lights automatically.
Does the Edge need my phone?
No for navigation and recording; the maps and GPS are on the device. Yes for incident detection alerts, LiveTrack, GroupRide messaging, weather and notifications, which route through the Garmin Connect app on a paired smartphone.
Is DiveCatalog.com an authorized Garmin dealer?
Yes. We are an authorized Garmin dealer, so every Edge sold here is genuine, registered through official distribution and covered by Garmin's full manufacturer warranty.
