Stream2Sea began with a dive trip. Cosmetic chemist Autumn Blum was diving in Palau when she saw how much sunscreen, shampoo, and body care washes off divers and snorkelers and straight onto the reef. She went looking for products that had actually been tested for their effect on aquatic life, found almost none, and in 2015 started Stream2Sea to make them herself.

What sets the brand apart is that it tests instead of just claiming. Stream2Sea formulas have been put through aquatic toxicity studies with the EcoTox team at Eckerd College, covering freshwater fish, saltwater fish, and coral larvae, and have met biodegradability criteria in both fresh and salt water. The company uses the term Reef-Safer on purpose: no product is completely harmless in the water, so the goal is to be measurably safer and to keep improving. Autumn Blum is a member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, and Stream2Sea is a woman-owned, veteran-operated company.

Every formula leaves out oxybenzone, octinoxate, parabens, and phthalates. Products are USDA Certified BioBased, carry the Protect Land + Sea certification, are cruelty-free, and ship in packaging made from ocean-bound and post-consumer recycled materials.
