SeaLife — Underwater Photography, Designed to Be Simple
SeaLife's design philosophy has stayed remarkably consistent since its first 35mm film camera in 1993, made by Pioneer Research in Moorestown, New Jersey: avoid complicated switches and buttons, and build cameras, housings, and lighting that a snorkeler or diver can learn simply by handling and exploring — not by reading a manual cover to cover. "Our design philosophy is to make the cameras, housings and lighting in such a way that the snorkeler or diver can learn the functions easily enough by handling the product and navigating through its features," says SeaLife VP Sven Harms, whose father founded the underwater camera business that became SeaLife.
That consistency hasn't come at the cost of innovation. SeaLife produced the world's first digital underwater camera in 2000, the first non-housed digital underwater camera in 2007, and in 2014 the Micro HD became the world's first permanently and fully sealed digital underwater camera — no O-rings to lubricate, no doors to maintain, and no risk of flooding through a compromised seal. In 2013, SeaLife introduced the Sea Dragon underwater lighting system alongside the Flex-Connect tray, grip, arm, and mounting accessory ecosystem that ties the entire product range together. In 2020, the SportDiver became the first smartphone dive housing built with its own exclusively designed companion app.

The SeaLife Product Range
Cameras
The Micro 3.0 is SeaLife's flagship permanently sealed camera — a 16MP Sony CMOS sensor, 4K ultra-high-definition video, RAW capture support, and a 100° wide-angle lens, all in a body with no O-rings to maintain. The ReefMaster RM-4K brings a pocket-sized, ultra-compact alternative with a 14MP Panasonic sensor and 4K video in an even smaller package.

Underwater Camera Housings (Smartphone)
The SportDiver family lets you take your own smartphone underwater — the SportDiver S covers entry-level depths to 100ft (30m), while the SportDiver Ultra extends to 130ft (40m) with a removable color-correction filter and seven standard 1/4-20 tripod mounts. Bluetooth Low Energy connects the housing to SeaLife's free companion app with no cables touching the phone, and Dual Leak Alarms (moisture and vacuum pressure) provide genuine peace of mind.

Sea Dragon Lighting
The Sea Dragon line spans from the 2000F flood light through the 3000F Color Boost and the dual-beam 3000SF Pro — COB LED technology with a 90+ Color Rendering Index that closely mimics natural sunlight, solving the classic underwater photography problem of everything looking blue at depth. All Sea Dragon lights integrate with the Flex-Connect mounting system.

Key SeaLife Technologies
Permanently Sealed Construction: Pioneered with the Micro HD in 2014, this design eliminates O-rings, doors, and the routine maintenance (and flood risk) that comes with them — you simply charge the camera and dive.
Flex-Connect System: Introduced alongside Sea Dragon lighting in 2013, Flex-Connect lets trays, grips, arms, and adapters click together in seconds — transforming a compact single-camera setup into a full multi-light rig (and back again for travel or cleaning) without tools.
Color Boost (Sea Dragon): A patent-pending mode that blends specific red and white light frequencies to replenish the red wavelengths water filters out first — producing warmer, more naturally colorful images and video without needing a separate color-correction filter.
Dual Leak Alarms (SportDiver): Combines an internal moisture sensor with a vacuum pressure sensor, alerting you with on-screen, audio, and LED warnings if the housing's waterproof seal is ever compromised — a genuinely proactive safety feature rather than relying on visual inspection alone.

Frequently Asked Questions — SeaLife
When did SeaLife start making underwater cameras?
SeaLife's first 35mm film camera was introduced in 1993, made by Pioneer Research in Moorestown, New Jersey. The company has continued through digital film cameras, the world's first digital underwater camera in 2000, and today's permanently sealed Micro series.
What does "permanently sealed" mean for the Micro 3.0?
The camera body has no O-rings, doors, or openings to maintain — it's factory-sealed from the start, eliminating the routine lubrication and inspection that conventional housed cameras require, along with the flooding risk that comes from a missed or worn seal.
What is Flex-Connect?
SeaLife's modular mounting system for trays, grips, arms, and lights, introduced alongside Sea Dragon lighting in 2013. Components click together in seconds, letting you reconfigure a rig from compact to full-featured (or back again) without tools.
Can I use my existing smartphone with SeaLife gear?
Yes — the SportDiver housing line is built specifically to encase your own iPhone or Android smartphone, paired with SeaLife's free companion app for full camera control underwater. Check compatibility for your specific phone model before ordering.
