Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Garmin Edge 540 and the Edge 840?
The Edge 840 adds a responsive touchscreen alongside the same button layout and doubles internal memory to 32 GB, while the Edge 540 is button-only with 16 GB. Both share the 2.6-inch color display, multi-band GNSS, IPX7 water rating and up to 26 hours of battery in demanding use, or up to 42 hours in Battery Saver Mode.
How much extra battery life does the Edge 840 Solar add?
The Edge 840 Solar uses a solar charging lens to reach up to 32 hours in demanding use and up to 60 hours in Battery Saver Mode, compared with up to 26 and 42 hours on the non-solar Edge 840. Garmin rates solar input based on 75,000 lux, so gains depend on how much direct sunlight the lens receives while you ride.
Is the Garmin Edge 840 waterproof enough for rain?
Yes. The Edge 540 and Edge 840 series carry an IEC 60529 IPX7 water rating, which covers rain and splashes during riding. These are cycling computers, not dive computers, so they are not intended for diving or sustained submersion. Operating temperature ranges from -20 to 60 degrees C (-4 to 140 degrees F).
What sensors and accessories work with the Edge 540 and Edge 840?
Both models pair with power meters, Varia radar devices, Garmin inReach devices and Tacx indoor smart trainers, and they connect to the Garmin Connect app and Connect IQ Store over Bluetooth, ANT+ or Wi-Fi. They use Garmin's quarter-turn mount system, so existing out-front and stem mounts transfer straight over from an earlier Edge.
