Suunto — Dive Deeper, Climb Higher, Never Get Lost
In 1936, Finnish inventor and orienteer Tuomas Vohlonen, frustrated by the inaccuracy of the compasses available to him, invented a new method for manufacturing liquid-filled compasses — with a steadier, more accurate needle capable of enduring the harshest Nordic conditions. That compass became the Suunto M-311, went into mass production, and was later adopted by the Finnish Army as the M-34. In 1939, a Finnish soldier survived a Soviet sniper's bullet because it struck his Suunto M-311 field compass instead of reaching him. Suunto's tagline, "Replacing Luck," traces directly to that story.
In 1965, a British sport diver discovered his Suunto compass still worked underwater, and Suunto responded by launching its first dedicated dive compass, the SK-4. In 1987, before divers had any option other than calculating their dive profiles from printed tables, Suunto released the SME-ML — the company's first dive computer, which changed recreational diving safety fundamentally. In 1997, the Suunto Spyder became the world's first watch-sized dive computer, bringing full dive-computer capability into a compact wristwatch. In 2026, Suunto celebrated 90 years since founding by launching the Suunto Nautic and Nautic S dive computers, with the Nautic featuring a 3.26-inch AMOLED display — the largest dive computer display on the market.
