SCUBAPRO — The Gold Standard Since 1963
SCUBAPRO was founded in 1963 by Gustav Dalla Valle, an Italian-American diving enthusiast and equipment importer, and Dick Bonin, a former US Navy SEAL submersible operations officer. The two bought the rights to the SCUBAPRO name for a single dollar from the bankrupt Healthways company — and from that almost accidental beginning built what became known as the Rolls-Royce of scuba diving. The company's tagline, "Deep Down You Want The Best," wasn't just marketing; SCUBAPRO genuinely outspent its competitors on research and development, hiring engineers who were themselves divers and instructors, and rigorously testing every product for real-world performance and durability before it reached the market.
That same year, SCUBAPRO released the MK2 — a piston first stage so simple and reliable that the MK2 EVO remains in production today, six decades later, with only minor modifications. Two years after that came the Jet Fin, which solved a fundamental design flaw in fins of the era (they actually opposed propulsion rather than enhancing it) and remains a favorite among military and technical divers to this day. The list of SCUBAPRO firsts is genuinely long: the first Stabilizing ("Stab") Jacket BCD in 1971, the AIR2 alternate inflator regulator in 1979, the first weight-integrated BCD (Seahawk) in 1996, and the Galileo HUD in 2019 — a mask-mounted, hands-free dive computer display unlike anything else in diving.
Today SCUBAPRO is part of Johnson Outdoors, employing more than 400 diving enthusiasts across 10 countries on four continents — a workforce where roughly one in two employees dives, and over a third are certified instructors. At DiveCatalog.com, we carry the full current SCUBAPRO lineup as an authorized dealer: regulators, BCDs, dive computers, masks, fins, snorkels, and wetsuits. Frequently Asked Questions — SCUBAPRO
Who founded SCUBAPRO and when?
SCUBAPRO was founded in 1963 by Gustav Dalla Valle and Dick Bonin, who purchased the rights to the SCUBAPRO name for one dollar from the bankrupt Healthways company. Dalla Valle sold his stake to Johnson Worldwide Associates (now Johnson Outdoors) in 1974; the brand remains part of Johnson Outdoors today.
Is the original Jet Fin still available?
Yes — the Jet Fin, introduced in 1965, remains in production and is still favored by military and technical divers for its proven performance, decades after its original design solved the propulsion-resistance problems of earlier fin designs.
What is the difference between the MK25 EVO and MK17 EVO2 first stages?
The MK25 EVO is SCUBAPRO's premier cold-water-resistant first stage, built around excellent freeze resistance and instant air delivery. The MK17 EVO2 uses a more compact, lighter forged body, suited to a range of conditions and paired with multiple second stage options depending on your diving style and budget.
What is the HYDROS PRO's 4-Life Modular Design?
It's SCUBAPRO's component system for the HYDROS PRO 2 BCD, built without Velcro or zippers, allowing parts to be customized, swapped, or repaired more easily and durably over the long-term life of the BCD.
