Garmin Satellite Communicators — Stay Connected Anywhere on Earth
Cell phones stop working the moment you leave cellular coverage. Mountains, remote coastlines, open ocean, desert — anywhere you go that's genuinely wild, you're on your own unless you have satellite communication capability. Garmin's inReach series uses the Iridium satellite constellation — the only network that provides truly global two-way coverage, including the poles — to give you two-way text messaging, SOS emergency alert, and GPS tracking anywhere on Earth, independent of any cell network.
For divers, this is particularly relevant for liveaboard dive trips to remote destinations — the Red Sea, the Coral Triangle, Pacific island chains, Arctic ice diving — where medical emergencies, bad weather, or mechanical issues far from cell coverage require the ability to communicate with the outside world. The inReach Mini Dive Case makes the inReach Mini waterproof to dive depth, allowing divers to take satellite communication capability underwater on technical and exploratory dives. The GPSMAP 67i adds dedicated GPS navigation with topographic maps alongside inReach communication, suited to dive destinations that also involve overland navigation.
At DiveCatalog.com, we carry the full current inReach lineup — the inReach Mini 2, inReach Mini 3, inReach Mini 3 Plus, inReach Messenger, GPSMAP 67i — plus the inReach Mini Dive Case — as an authorized Garmin dealer.
The inReach Lineup
Garmin inReach Mini 2 — The Original Compact
The inReach Mini 2 is Garmin's proven compact satellite communicator — a small, lightweight device that clips to a pack or BCD, provides two-way satellite text messaging and SOS, and syncs with the Garmin Explore app on a paired smartphone for easy message composition and map viewing. Two-way messaging anywhere on Earth via Iridium. SOS reaches Garmin's 24/7 International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC). LiveTrack shares your real-time GPS position with up to 10 contacts. Available in Black and Flame Red. Requires an active inReach satellite subscription plan. Battery life up to 14 days in 10-minute tracking mode.
Garmin inReach Mini 3 — Color Touchscreen Upgrade (Launched December 2025)
The inReach Mini 3 is the next generation of the Mini 2, adding a 1.9" high-resolution color touchscreen for dramatically easier on-device operation — you can read and respond to messages directly on the device without pairing a smartphone. Two-way satellite messaging via Iridium, SOS, LiveTrack, and the Garmin Explore app for full map and trip planning features. TracBack routing helps you retrace your path to a starting point. Multiple two-way messaging options including Garmin Messenger, SMS via cellular gateway (subscription dependent), and email. IP67 rated. Battery life up to 14 days. The upgrade from Mini 2 is primarily the touchscreen — if you want to use the device standalone without a phone, the Mini 3 is significantly more usable.
Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus — Voice and Photo Messaging (Launched December 2025)
The inReach Mini 3 Plus builds on the Mini 3 with two key additions: a built-in speaker and microphone for audio messages and voice communication, and photo sharing capability via the Iridium satellite network. In addition to text messaging and SOS, you can send and receive voice notes and share photos — a meaningful upgrade for dive expeditions where a picture or voice message conveys information that text can't. All other Mini 3 capabilities are included. The most capable compact inReach device available.
Garmin inReach Messenger — The Accessible Entry
The inReach Messenger is Garmin's most accessible standalone satellite communicator, available with or without an annual SOS subscription plan at purchase. Designed for people who want satellite messaging and SOS capability without the full inReach subscription ecosystem. Simple interface, compact form factor. SOS capability with optional subscription. Available in two configurations: with active SOS monitoring subscription included, or without (SOS plan purchased separately). Battery life up to 28 days in 10-minute tracking mode — longer than the Mini series. The most affordable entry into Garmin satellite communication.
Garmin GPSMAP 67i — Dedicated Navigation + inReach
The GPSMAP 67i combines a rugged, full-featured GPS handheld navigator with the complete inReach satellite communication suite. The 3" color display shows TopoActive topographic maps with detailed terrain, trails, roads, and points of interest. Multi-band GPS with multi-constellation support (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS) for the most accurate position available in handheld GPS. 16GB internal storage for map downloads. 250-hour battery life in GPS mode. Preloaded with US topo maps; downloadable worldwide maps via Garmin Connect. Rugged design meets MIL-STD-810 shock, vibration, and temperature standards, IP67 waterproofing. SOS and two-way messaging via inReach. The right choice for divers who also do backcountry exploration, hiking, or expedition work where dedicated GPS navigation and satellite communication are both needed.
inReach Mini Dive Case
The inReach Mini Dive Case is a waterproof housing specifically designed to protect the Garmin inReach Mini satellite communicator at scuba diving depths. It makes the inReach Mini waterproof to 10 ATM (100 meters) — appropriate for the vast majority of recreational and technical scuba diving. This allows technical divers, cave divers, and expedition divers to carry satellite communication capability underwater. On the surface, the inReach works normally in the case; underwater, it's protected to full dive depth. A meaningful safety addition for exploratory diving in remote locations where emergency communication matters even underwater. Also available: the inReach Mini 3 Dive Case, rated to 10 ATM, for the new Mini 3 and Mini 3 Plus models.
How inReach Works
Garmin inReach devices use the Iridium satellite constellation — 66 cross-linked low-Earth-orbit satellites providing complete global coverage including the poles. Unlike satellite phone systems that require a clear view of the southern sky to reach geostationary satellites, Iridium's low-Earth-orbit network provides coverage from multiple satellites simultaneously, making it more reliable in challenging terrain and latitudes.
All inReach devices require an active inReach satellite plan for full functionality (messaging and tracking). Plans are available monthly or annually through Garmin and range from basic safety-only plans to unlimited messaging. SOS emergency alert to the IERCC is included in all plans. Charges are by subscription — there are no per-message costs on most plans, making it practical to check in regularly throughout an expedition.

Frequently Asked Questions — Garmin Satellite Communicators
Do inReach devices require a subscription?
Yes. Two-way satellite messaging and tracking require an active Garmin inReach subscription plan. Plans are available monthly or annually in multiple tiers. SOS emergency response is included in all active plans. The inReach Messenger is available with or without a subscription plan bundled at purchase. Contact Garmin directly for current plan pricing and options.
What is the difference between the Mini 2 and Mini 3?
The Mini 2 uses a small monochrome display and relies heavily on a paired smartphone for message composition and map viewing. The Mini 3 adds a 1.9" high-resolution color touchscreen and TracBack routing, making it much more usable as a standalone device without a smartphone. If you'll always have your phone handy, the Mini 2 remains capable. If you want to operate the device independently, go Mini 3.
What is the difference between the Mini 3 and Mini 3 Plus?
The Mini 3 Plus adds a built-in speaker and microphone for voice messaging and photo sharing over the Iridium network. If you want to send/receive voice notes and photos, go Plus. If text messaging is sufficient, the standard Mini 3 covers all the core capabilities.
Does the inReach Mini Dive Case affect signal?
The inReach Mini Dive Case is designed specifically for Garmin inReach Mini devices and maintains satellite signal capability for surface use. Underwater, satellite signal is not available — Iridium satellites transmit radio waves that do not penetrate seawater. The device protects the inReach while you're underwater, and returns to full satellite functionality when you surface. Note this is different from the Garmin Descent S1 Communication Buoy, which enables SubWave sonar underwater communication between compatible dive computers.
Which inReach devices are compatible with the Dive Case?
The inReach Mini Dive Case (original) fits the inReach Mini 2. The inReach Mini 3 Dive Case fits the Mini 3 and Mini 3 Plus. The two cases are not interchangeable — confirm which device you have before ordering the case.
Can I use the inReach independently without a smartphone?
The inReach Mini 2 has limited standalone functionality — it can send and receive preset messages and trigger SOS without a phone, but full messaging is much easier with the Garmin Explore app on a paired phone. The inReach Mini 3 and Mini 3 Plus with their color touchscreens are significantly more usable as standalone devices. The GPSMAP 67i is fully standalone with its own 3" display and onboard maps.
