It is water rated to IEC 60529 IPX7, which withstands incidental exposure to water of up to 1 m for up to 30 minutes. It operates from -20 to 60 degrees C (-4 to 140 degrees F).
Is the inReach Mini 2 a satellite phone, and where can I buy one?
It is a satellite communicator rather than a voice satellite phone: it sends and receives two-way text messages, shares your location and triggers an interactive SOS over the global Iridium satellite network. You can buy it here in Black (part 010-02602-01) or Flame Red (part 010-02602-00) from DiveCatalog.com, an authorized Garmin dealer. An active satellite subscription plan is required before it can communicate.
Do I need a subscription plan to use it for emergencies?
Yes. An active satellite subscription is required to access the Iridium network and communicate with the inReach Mini 2, including messaging, location tracking, inReach weather forecasts and interactive SOS. SOS alerts go to Garmin Response, a 24/7 staffed emergency response coordination center, and you can exchange messages with the coordinators while help is organized. Garmin offers satellite airtime plans.
How long does the battery last and how is it charged?
The built-in rechargeable 1,250 mAh lithium-ion battery delivers up to 14 days of continuous run time in the default 10-minute tracking mode and up to 30 days in 30-minute tracking mode. Powered off, it stays charged and ready for up to one year, which suits a device kept in a ditch kit. It charges over USB-C, at temperatures between 0 degrees and 45 degrees C (32 degrees to 113 degrees F).
