Product Information

The Bare 5mm Elate Neoprene Women's Multi-Sport Full Wetsuit is a 5 mm women's full suit in grey, built from a high-stretch neoprene blend with proprietary laminate layers and an anatomically correct three-dimensional pattern, so it seals snugly for scuba diving while still allowing watersport-level range of motion. It uses an extra-long heavy-duty back zipper and Armor-Flex knee pads, and the Elate construction is 100% PFC-free.

Who it is for

This suit is for women who dive and also surf, paddle, snorkel or free dive in the same season and want one warm full suit that moves. The 5 mm full-suit thickness covers arms and legs for diving and multi-sport watersport use, and the anatomical shoulder, neck and torso patterning suits divers who notice shoulder restriction when reaching for valves, a BCD dump or a paddle stroke. Bare publishes 14 sizes, including T and + options, so there are more fit choices than a standard size run alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a wetsuit fit?

A wetsuit should feel snug everywhere, with no loose pockets at the lower back, armpits, or behind the knees where water can collect and flush. It will feel tighter than normal clothing on land, which is expected, because the suit works by holding a thin layer of water that your body warms. If you cannot take a full breath or the neck chokes you it is too small, and if you can pinch loose folds of neoprene it is too big.

What do you wear under a wetsuit?

Most divers wear a swimsuit, a rash guard, or a thin dive-specific base layer under a wetsuit. A slick base layer makes a tight suit much easier to pull on and cuts down chafing at the neck, shoulders, and underarms. Avoid thick cotton clothing, which soaks up water, bunches, and makes you colder rather than warmer.

How do you put on a tight wetsuit?

Work upward in small sections, pulling a little neoprene at a time rather than yanking on one spot, and get the suit fully seated at the ankles and knees before working on the hips and shoulders. A plastic bag over each foot and hand, or wetting the suit first, helps it slide into place. Grip with flat palms rather than fingertips, since fingernails are the most common cause of torn neoprene.

Does a thicker wetsuit mean a warmer wetsuit?

As a general rule, thicker neoprene insulates more, so a higher millimeter rating is warmer in the same conditions. Warmth also depends heavily on fit, suit style, seam construction, whether you add a hood, boots, and gloves, how long the dive is, and your own cold tolerance, so two divers in identical suits can feel very differently. Use thickness as a starting point and refine it against your local conditions and personal experience.

How do I care for and store a wetsuit?

Rinse it inside and out in fresh water after every dive day, and use a wetsuit-specific wash occasionally to control odor. Dry it inside-out first and then flip it, always out of direct sunlight, because UV and heat break down neoprene faster than anything else. Store it hanging on a wide-shouldered hanger or laid flat rather than folded, so you do not set permanent creases.

How long does a wetsuit last?

Lifespan depends far more on use and care than on age, so a suit dived hard in sun and chlorine may soften within a couple of seasons while a well-rinsed occasional-use suit can last many years. Signs a suit is finished include compressed neoprene that no longer feels buoyant or warm, splitting seams, and looseness in areas that used to be snug. Repairing small cuts and seam separations early adds meaningfully to a suit's life.

What is the difference between a full suit, a shorty, and wetsuit separates?

A full suit covers arms and legs, a shorty stops at the upper arms and thighs, and separates such as tops, bottoms, and hooded vests layer to add warmth where you want it. Layering a vest or top under a full suit adds core warmth and can extend the range of a suit you already own. Choose based on how much coverage you want, both for warmth and for protection against stings and abrasion.

What do the T and + sizes mean on the Bare Elate wetsuit?

Bare publishes the Elate in 02, 04, 04T, 06, 06+, 06T, 08, 08+, 08T, 10, 10+, 12, 12+ and 14; contact us for sizing help.

Is the Bare Elate wetsuit PFC-free?

Yes. The Bare Elate line is built with 100% PFC-free construction, meaning no per- and polyfluorinated chemicals are used in the suit. Bare also notes that the neoprene contains chloroprene, which is the subject of a California Proposition 65 warning. The suit ships with a reusable hanger and a PLA compostable and recyclable bag rather than conventional plastic packaging.

What makes the Elate easy to get into?

Two features. The Elate uses an extra-long heavy-duty back zipper for easy donning and doffing, and the body uses a high-stretch neoprene blend for extreme levels of stretch, comfort and mobility. The anatomically correct three-dimensional pattern in the shoulder and neck area also reduces the fight at the shoulders when you pull the suit up.

How does the integrated suit saver work?

The collar closes with a low-profile hook-and-loop tab that keeps bulk off the neck. The integrated suit saver protects your suit from the hook-and-loop collar tab snagging on the neoprene.

Review summary

4.4 29 ratings across the web

Written reviews are still few for this one. It is a women's 5-6mm full wetsuit built with a high-stretch neoprene laminate blend and anatomically correct 3D patterning for movement across the torso, arms and legs. It has a low-profile Velcro collar tab with an integrated suit saver, an extra-long heavy-duty back zipper, and Armor-flex knee pads. Early reviewers mention it kept them warm through 40-minute dives in 72 degree water and fits snugly, taking effort to put on. Suited to women diving or doing other watersports in cooler conditions.

I am a small woman, about 4’11” and 90 or so lbs and had a lot of trouble finding a suit that would fit. I was so cold in the north Fl springs (72 deg) that my last checkout dive for my certification had to be postponed until the weather warmed. I was pretty bummed. No store I went to had much so I started looking at size charts online for as many brands as I could find. Sizes between brands differ a lot and I was worried about ordering online since I couldn’t try on the suit. I hesitantly ordered this Bare 5 mm as my measurements were pretty close to theirs. Last weekend I was able to do 2 40-min dives in the springs and the suit worked great! I was just barely starting to get cold at 40 min. It’s an effort to get into because it fits like a glove. Thank you Bare! I love this suit!
