The question I get asked more than any other, usually on a boat between dives, is some version of "what settings should I use?" It is a fair question with an annoying answer: there is no single set of numbers that works underwater, because you are managing two completely separate light sources at once — the sun, which is fading and turning blue as you descend, and your strobes, which are not.

What does exist is a small set of starting points and a logic for adjusting them. Once you understand which dial controls which light source, manual mode stops feeling like guesswork and starts feeling faster than any automatic setting. This guide covers the underwater camera settings I actually dial in, why each one does what it does below the surface, and where to start for wide angle, macro, ambient light, and video.

Why auto mode fails underwater

Your camera's meter is built for a world where one light source illuminates everything more or less evenly. Underwater, that assumption breaks in three ways.

First, the water is eating your light. Red wavelengths are absorbed within roughly the first 15 feet (5 m), and by 130 feet (40 m) almost no visible red is left. A meter reading the resulting blue-dominant scene will expose for blue and produce a technically correct, visually flat image.

Second, your strobe fires for a fraction of a millisecond and lights only the foreground. The camera's meter cannot see that light before the shot happens, so any evaluative metering decision it makes is based on incomplete information.

Third, contrast underwater is extreme. A dark reef against a bright surface will fool almost any automatic mode into blowing out the water column or crushing the subject into black.

Manual mode fixes all three because you are not asking the camera to guess. You are telling it exactly how much ambient light to record, and letting the strobes handle the rest.

The one rule that makes underwater exposure make sense

Everything below follows from a single principle:

  • Shutter speed and ISO control the ambient light — the blue or green water behind your subject.
  • Aperture and strobe power control the strobe-lit foreground — your subject.

Shutter speed has essentially no effect on strobe exposure. A strobe's flash duration is far shorter than any shutter speed you would use, so whether the shutter is open for 1/60 or 1/250 of a second, the same burst of light reaches the sensor. This is counterintuitive if you came from land photography, and it is the single most useful thing to internalize.

The practical consequence: if your background water is too bright, speed up the shutter. If your subject is too dark, raise strobe power or open the aperture. Those two problems are now independent of each other, which is exactly what you want when you have thirty seconds before a turtle swims off.

Setting by setting

Shutter speed

Shutter speed is your background dial. Faster shutter equals darker blue water; slower shutter equals brighter, more open water. On a typical tropical reef at 50 feet, the difference between 1/60 and 1/250 is the difference between a bright, airy background and a deep navy one.

Two limits define the usable range:

  • The upper limit is your flash sync speed. On most cameras with a mechanical shutter this is 1/200 or 1/250 of a second. Exceed it and part of the frame goes black, because the shutter curtain is still crossing the sensor when the strobe fires. Some modern mirrorless bodies and high-speed-sync setups go faster, but treat 1/250 as the default ceiling unless you have confirmed otherwise for your specific camera.
  • The lower limit is subject and camera motion. Around 1/60 is where handheld shots start showing motion blur from a moving subject or an unstable diver. For static macro subjects you can go slower; for a fish that will not sit still, do not.

A workable habit: for slow or stationary subjects, 1/60 to 1/125. For anything moving, 1/125 to 1/250.

Aperture

Aperture is your subject dial when you are shooting with strobes. Stopping down to f/11 darkens the strobe-lit foreground; opening to f/5.6 brightens it. It also controls depth of field, which matters enormously in macro and hardly at all in wide angle.

There is a secondary reason to stop down for wide angle: dome ports produce their sharpest corners at smaller apertures. Around f/8 to f/11 is where most wide-angle rigs behave.

For macro, aperture is doing double duty. At high magnification, depth of field can be a fraction of an inch, so f/16 to f/22 is standard even though it costs you light — which you make up with strobe power, not ISO.

ISO

Treat ISO as the setting you change last. Start at your camera's base ISO — usually 100 or 200 — and raise it only when shutter speed and aperture are already where you want them and the ambient exposure is still too dark.

Underwater images are unforgiving of noise because so much of the frame is a smooth blue gradient, where noise is highly visible. Modern full-frame sensors are clean to ISO 1600 and beyond; smaller sensors in compacts are not, and pushing them past ISO 400 shows.

The exception is ambient-light shooting with no strobes, where a higher ISO is simply the price of a usable shutter speed. Take the noise.

Starting points by shot type

These are starting points, not answers. Take the shot, look at the histogram, adjust. But they will get you close on the first frame instead of the tenth.

Wide angle with strobes, sunlit reef

Shutter 1/125 to 1/200, aperture f/8 to f/11, ISO 200 to 400. Strobes at roughly half power to start, positioned wide and pulled back behind the port.

Adjust the shutter to taste for the blue you want behind the reef, then adjust strobe power until the foreground coral or diver is correctly exposed. If you find yourself at full strobe power and still underexposed, you are too far from the subject — move closer rather than opening the aperture.

Wide angle, ambient light only

Shutter 1/125, aperture f/5.6 to f/8, ISO 400 to 800 (auto ISO works well here). Set a custom white balance at depth or shoot RAW and correct later.

This is the setup for big animals in blue water, silhouettes against the surface, and any situation where you are too far from the subject for strobes to reach — which, realistically, is anything beyond about 6 feet.

Macro

Shutter 1/160 to 1/250, aperture f/16 to f/22, ISO 100 to 200. Strobes forward of the port, angled inward.

The fast shutter and small aperture combine to kill ambient light almost entirely, which is what produces the clean black backgrounds macro shooters want. Everything you see in the frame is lit by your strobes, so strobe power becomes your only real exposure control — and that is a feature, not a limitation.

Video

Video follows a different rule. Set shutter speed to roughly double your frame rate — 1/60 at 30fps, 1/50 at 25fps, 1/120 at 60fps — and leave it there. That ratio produces natural-looking motion blur; deviating from it makes footage look either stuttery or smeared.

Because shutter speed is locked, aperture and ISO become your exposure controls, and continuous lighting replaces strobes. A wide, even beam matters more than raw output here.

White balance and file format

Shoot RAW if your camera offers it. This is not a preference; underwater it is close to mandatory. RAW files let you reset white balance after the fact with no quality loss, and underwater white balance is almost never right in-camera.

If you are shooting with strobes, set white balance to flash or daylight and leave it. Your strobes output roughly daylight-balanced light, so the foreground will be correct and the background blue will be blue — which is what you want.

If you are shooting ambient, set a custom white balance at the depth you are working, against something neutral like a grey slate or a sandy patch. Redo it every 15 to 20 feet of depth change. Custom white balance stops working somewhere around 50 to 65 feet, because there is no red information left in the scene for the camera to boost. Below that, either bring your own light or commit to a blue image.

Focus settings that matter underwater

Exposure gets all the attention, but focus is where more dives are lost.

  • Single-point AF, not zone or wide. Underwater scenes are cluttered, and automatic point selection reliably picks a piece of coral instead of the fish's eye.
  • Single-shot AF for macro, continuous for moving subjects. With macro, lock focus and use small body movements to fine-tune the focal plane — it is faster and more precise than letting the lens hunt.
  • Back-button focus, if your camera supports it. Separating focus from the shutter release means a strobe recycle or a missed press does not reset your focus.
  • Use a focus light. Autofocus needs contrast, and there is less of it as you go deeper. A modest continuous light aimed at the subject dramatically improves lock speed, particularly on macro subjects and in low visibility.

Where the gear limits the settings

Not every camera gives you the controls above, and it is worth knowing which limitation you are working against.

Compact cameras and phone housings often lack a true manual mode, or offer manual shutter and ISO with a fixed aperture. A workflow for the first five minutes of a dive

Settings are not something you set once on the boat. Here is the sequence I run:

  1. On the surface: manual mode, RAW, single-point AF, white balance on flash. Shutter 1/125, f/8, ISO 200 as a neutral starting point.
  2. At depth, before approaching anything: shoot one frame of open water with strobes off. Check the histogram. Adjust shutter speed until the blue is where you want it.
  3. Then shoot a test frame with strobes on at half power on something unimportant — a rock, a patch of sand. Adjust strobe power until the foreground is right.
  4. Zoom in on the review screen. Check focus at 100% and look for backscatter. Both are invisible at fit-to-screen magnification.
  5. Re-check after every significant depth change. Ambient light at 25 feet and 80 feet are different worlds; the shutter speed that produced a rich blue up shallow will produce black at depth.

Two minutes of this at the start of a dive is worth more than any amount of adjusting mid-encounter.
