How to Choose a Dive Light: Lumens, Beam Angle, and Burn Time Explained

Most divers buy their first light for a night dive and then discover it lives in their gear bag permanently. That's the right instinct, for a reason that has nothing to do with darkness: water strips color out of daylight long before it strips out brightness. Red is gone by about 15 feet. Orange follows shortly after. By 60 feet on a bright day you're looking at a blue-gray world and don't realize what you're missing until someone puts a beam on the reef and an ordinary sponge turns scarlet.

The problem with shopping for one is that dive light marketing has settled on a single number — lumens — and that number tells you less than you'd think. Here's what the specs actually mean, how much light you need for the diving you do, and how to put together a light setup that doesn't leave you in the dark when a battery quits.

Lumens, lux, and beam angle

Lumens measure output, not usefulness

A lumen is a measure of total light emitted, full stop. It says nothing about where that light goes. Two lights rated at 1,000 lumens can perform completely differently underwater depending on how the beam is shaped — one might throw a tight, punchy spot 40 feet down a wreck corridor while the other washes a soft glow across everything within arm's reach.

The related term you'll see is lux, which is lumens per square meter — a measure of intensity at a given point. Concentrate 1,000 lumens into a narrow beam and the lux in the center is high. Spread the same 1,000 lumens across a wide beam and the lux drops, even though the total output is identical.

Beam angle decides what the light actually does

This is the spec most buyers skip and most regret skipping. Beam angle is stated in degrees and generally falls into three ranges.

Narrow or spot beams (roughly 6 to 15 degrees) concentrate output into a tight cone. They punch through water, reach further, and produce a clearly defined pool of light you can point at something specific. This is the classic recreational and technical dive light — good for peering into crevices, reading gauges, signaling a buddy, and cutting through poor visibility. Wide or flood beams (roughly 60 to 120 degrees) cover a broad area with even, soft light. They're the right choice for video and photography, for general situational awareness in a big open space, and for anyone who finds a hard-edged spot beam distracting. Dual-beam and focusable lights give you both. Some models pair a wide LED array with a separate narrow emitter; others use a mechanical head that adjusts beam width on the fly. If you can't decide, this is a legitimate way to avoid the decision.

Why a wide beam can make visibility worse

Water carrying silt, plankton, or sand behaves like fog. Point a wide beam into it and the light reflects off every particle straight back at your eyes — the same effect as switching on high beams in dense fog. Divers call this backscatter, and it's the single best argument for owning a narrow beam if you dive murky quarries, cold-water sites, or anywhere with heavy particulate.

Color temperature and color rendering

Color temperature is measured in kelvin. Lower numbers (around 3,000 K) look warm and yellow; higher numbers (6,000 K and up) look cool and blue-white. Most dive lights land between 5,000 K and 6,500 K, which reads as neutral daylight underwater and does a reasonable job restoring reds.

If you shoot photo or video, look for a color rendering index (CRI) figure as well — it describes how faithfully a light reproduces color compared to natural daylight. Higher is better, and it matters far more for imaging than for navigation. For a light you'll use purely to see with, color temperature between 5,000 K and 6,500 K is entirely adequate and CRI is a bonus.

How many lumens you actually need

Brighter is not automatically better. A very powerful light in clear tropical water at midday is largely wasted, and in silty water it can actively hurt your visibility. Match output to the diving.

250 to 500 lumens: backups and daytime crevice lights

Small, cheap, and genuinely useful. A pocket light in this range fits in a BCD pocket, runs a long time, and is bright enough to light up the inside of a coral head or a gauge face on a day dive. Every diver should own at least one, whether as a backup for night diving or as the light that lives permanently in your kit. 800 to 1,500 lumens: the recreational primary

This is where most divers should be spending their money. It's enough output for a night dive on a reef, enough reach to be a credible signaling tool, and enough restraint that you're not blinding your buddy or lighting up the silt column. Battery life at this level is also practical — usually an hour or more at full output.

2,000 lumens and up: wrecks, cold water, and imaging

Above 2,000 lumens you're buying reach and coverage for demanding conditions — large wreck interiors, green cold water, deep dives where ambient light has effectively vanished, or video work that needs to light a whole scene rather than a spot.

One caution: high-output lights generate real heat and most are not designed to run at full power in open air. If you switch one on for a battery check on the boat, keep it brief.

Burn time, batteries, and charging

Burn time is almost always quoted at maximum output, which is the number that matters least if you dive at medium. Look for the full range — a light rated "1 hour" at 100 percent might run three or four hours on a lower setting, and that's the setting you'll actually use.

Two questions worth asking before you buy:

Is the output regulated? A regulated light holds a constant brightness until the battery is nearly spent, then drops off quickly. An unregulated light dims gradually throughout the dive. Regulated is better for consistency; unregulated gives you a visible warning that power is running low. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you own.

Rechargeable or replaceable cells? Rechargeable lithium-ion is the norm and gives the best output per dollar, but it ties you to a charger and a power source. Lights that run on standard cells — AA, C, or 18650 — can be revived anywhere. On a remote liveaboard, that flexibility has real value. A note for travelers: airlines restrict lithium batteries to carry-on baggage, so plan for your light to fly in the cabin.

The three-light system for night diving

Every major training agency requires two battery-powered lights for a night dive, and operators enforce it. In practice, experienced night divers carry three items, each doing a different job.

Primary light

Your working light — the one you navigate, signal, and look at things with. For recreational night diving, 800 to 1,500 lumens with a narrow to medium beam is the sweet spot. Carry it on a wrist lanyard or clipped to a D-ring so it can't be dropped into the dark.

Backup light

A second, smaller light that stays in a BCD pocket and only comes out if the primary fails. It doesn't need to be powerful — it needs to be reliable and to have enough runtime to get you calmly back to the boat or the exit. Test it before every night dive, not on the surface interval after the fact.

Marker or signal light

A small light attached to your tank valve or snorkel so the boat and your buddy can locate you at a glance, day or night. These are inexpensive and are the item divers most often forget. One etiquette note that never appears on a spec sheet: never shine a light directly into another diver's mask. It destroys their dark adaptation for several minutes. Build details worth checking

Switch type

Mechanical push-button switches give tactile feedback through thick gloves and are easy to operate blind. Magnetic and rotary switches are sealed against flooding and often more durable, but can be fiddly with cold hands. Twist-on bezels are simple and reliable but require two hands. If you dive in a 5 mm glove, try the switch before you commit.

Depth rating and O-rings

Most quality recreational lights are rated to 100 meters, well beyond the 40 meter recreational limit — treat a low depth rating as a signal of general build quality rather than a real constraint. What matters more is O-ring design and how easy the light is to service. Anything you open to change a battery is something you can flood.

Grip, mounting, and lanyards

Handheld torches are the default, but hands are a finite resource underwater. Warm-water reef diver who wants color back. A 1,000 lumen narrow-to-medium beam is plenty. Buy once, carry it always, and add a cheap marker light.

Night diver. A 1,000 to 1,500 lumen primary, a 250 to 500 lumen backup in a pocket, and a marker light on the tank valve. Three items, none of them expensive.

Cold or low-visibility local diver. Prioritize a narrow beam over raw lumens. Glove-friendly switch, longer burn time, and something you can operate without looking at it.

Wreck and technical diver. 2,000 lumens or more, tight beam, Goodman handle, and a genuine backup rather than a token one.

Keeping a dive light alive

Dive lights fail for boring, preventable reasons. Rinse in fresh water after every dive and cycle the switch a few times while it's submerged in the rinse tank to flush salt out of the mechanism. Inspect and lightly grease the O-rings on a schedule, and replace any that look flattened, nicked, or dry. Store the light with the battery removed or the head loosened a quarter turn so the O-ring isn't compressed for months at a time. And check for corrosion on the contacts, which is the usual culprit when a light that worked in June refuses to switch on in September.

Common questions

Do I need a dive light for daytime diving?

You don't need one for safety, but it changes what you see. Water absorbs red wavelengths within the first 15 to 20 feet, so a light restores color that is physically absent at depth — and it's the only way to see into overhangs, wrecks, and crevices where the interesting animals hide.

How many lumens is enough for night diving?

800 to 1,500 lumens covers recreational night diving comfortably. Higher output helps in murky or cold water but is not required, and in silty conditions a very bright wide beam can reduce visibility rather than improve it.

Can I use a regular waterproof flashlight?

No. Household waterproof torches are typically rated for splashes or brief immersion, not for the pressure at depth. A dive light has a pressure-rated housing and sealed O-rings; a hardware-store flashlight will flood, usually somewhere between 30 and 60 feet.

What does a red light mode do?

Red light preserves your dark adaptation and is less likely to startle marine life, which makes it useful for observing nocturnal animals and for reading a slate without blinding yourself. Because water absorbs red first, its effective range is short — treat it as a close-quarters tool, not a navigation light.

Should I buy one bright light or two moderate ones?

Two, in almost every case. Redundancy matters more than peak output, and a failed single light on a night dive is a genuinely bad situation. A 1,000 lumen primary plus a 400 lumen backup beats one 3,000 lumen light for the same money.

The bottom line

Buy for beam angle first, output second. A 1,000 lumen light with a beam suited to your water will outperform a 3,000 lumen light with the wrong one, and it will do it for longer on a charge. Add a small backup, clip a marker light to your tank valve, and rinse everything properly afterwards.
