A flooded housing is the fastest way to end a dive trip. It is also, in most cases, avoidable. In fifteen years of shooting underwater and troubleshooting other people's rigs on boats, I have seen exactly one flood caused by a manufacturing failure. Every other one came down to a single hair on an o-ring, a grain of sand in the groove, a latch that was not fully closed, or a port seated a quarter turn short.
None of that requires expensive equipment to fix. It requires a routine. Here is the one I use, along with the maintenance details manufacturers actually publish, which differ more than most divers realize.
Why underwater camera housings flood
Housings seal through compression. An o-ring sits in a machined groove, the door or port closes against a mating surface, and water pressure pushes the seal tighter as you descend. That design is reliable, which is why the failure modes are so consistent.
The five things that actually cause floods
- Debris on the o-ring or sealing surface. A single hair, a sand grain, or a dried salt crystal creates a channel water follows. This is the leading cause by a wide margin.
- An o-ring that is twisted, pinched, or not fully seated in its groove.
- A latch or port that is not fully engaged. Cam locks and threaded ports feel closed well before they are closed.
- A damaged o-ring or sealing surface such as nicks, flat spots, hardening, or a scratched groove.
- Something trapped inside such as a lanyard, a strap end, or the edge of a moisture packet lying across the seal.
Four of the five happen at the moment you close the housing, on land, in the ten seconds when you are least focused. That is where the routine goes.
The pre-dive routine
This takes about three minutes and should happen somewhere clean, dry and out of the wind, not on a rocking boat deck with sand blowing across the camera table.
1. Remove and inspect the o-ring
Use the removal tool your housing came with, or a plastic card. Never use a metal object; a scratch in the groove is a permanent leak path. Run the o-ring between clean, dry fingers and feel for grit, nicks or flat spots. Look for cracking, chalkiness, or a section that has taken a permanent set.
2. Clean the groove and the mating surface
Wipe the groove with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab. Check the surface the o-ring presses against on the opposite half of the housing. Divers clean the groove and forget the mating face, and debris there leaks just as readily.
3. Reseat the o-ring without twisting it
Lay it into the groove and work around the circumference with light pressure so it sits flat and untwisted along its entire length. A twisted o-ring is a leak waiting for depth.
4. Close, latch and check the seal line
Close the housing, confirm the latch or cam lock is fully engaged, then look around the entire seal line. On clear housings you can usually see the o-ring compressed evenly. Anything that looks pinched or displaced means opening it up and starting again.
5. Soak before you dive, if you can
A five-minute soak in a rinse tank or bucket before the dive, with the camera left out if you are being cautious, will reveal most seal failures at zero cost. If your housing has a vacuum system or an electronic leak alarm, arm it and confirm it holds before you go in.
O-ring lubrication: what manufacturers actually say
This is where a lot of well-meaning advice goes wrong. Grease is not a sealant, and more of it does not mean a better seal. Its only job is to help the o-ring slide into position and stay supple, and some manufacturers do not want it used at all.
Ikelite's published guidance is that no lubricant is required on most of their housing o-rings, with a very slight film needed on SLR port o-rings and on the main o-ring of their ULTRAcompact and Compact Video housings. They also warn that lubricants from other brands can cause their o-rings to soften and swell, and that spray lubricants can cause stress cracking in the plastic. SeaLife takes a stricter line on several models and instructs owners not to grease the o-ring at all.
The practical rules that follow:
- Read your housing's manual before applying anything. Lubrication requirements are model-specific, not universal.
- If lubricant is called for, use the brand the manufacturer specifies, and apply a film so thin you cannot see it. Visible grease attracts sand and hair.
- Never use petroleum-based products or aerosol sprays anywhere near a housing.
When to replace an o-ring
Replace it when it is nicked, flattened, chalky, sticky or has visibly lost its round cross-section, and after any flood, even a minor one. Many shooters replace main o-rings annually regardless of appearance, which is cheap insurance next to the camera inside. Carry a spare set on any trip where a replacement would be hard to source.
Condensation: the leak that is not a leak
You seal the housing in a warm, humid room, then descend into cold water. The air trapped inside cools, hits its dew point and condenses on the inside of the port. Your first two dives of a tropical trip come back soft and hazy, and it looks exactly like the early stage of a leak.
Three habits prevent it:
- Seal the housing in the coolest, driest air available, an air-conditioned room rather than a humid dock, and never right after handling the camera with wet hands.
- Put a desiccant packet inside every time. A moisture absorber pack costs a few cents per dive and absorbs the humidity that would otherwise condense on your port. Position it clear of the seal and the lens.
- Let the rig temperature-stabilize in the shade before entering, rather than moving it straight from air conditioning to a sunlit deck.

Leak detection: knowing before it is too late
A slow leak at depth is quiet. By the time you notice water pooling in the bottom of a housing through a viewfinder, it has usually already reached the camera body.
Two systems shorten that reaction window:
- Moisture alarms. A sensor sits at the lowest point of the housing and triggers an audible and visual alert on contact with water. A retrofit leak sensor mounts inside most housings with adhesive pads and flashes red while sounding an alarm, which is often enough warning to start a controlled ascent with the housing held port-down.
- Vacuum systems. You pump a partial vacuum into the sealed housing before the dive; if it holds, the seal is proven. This catches bad seals on land, which is the only place a leak is harmless. Higher-end housings such as the SeaLife SportDiver Ultra integrate a vacuum pressure sensor into their leak alarm.
If an alarm goes off underwater, signal your buddy, keep the housing oriented so water pools away from the camera electronics, and ascend normally. Skipping a safety stop to save a camera is never the right trade.
Post-dive care
What you do in the twenty minutes after surfacing determines how the seal performs on the next dive. Salt crystals form as saltwater dries, and those crystals are exactly the debris that causes floods.
- Soak the sealed housing in fresh water for a couple of minutes. Do not just splash it.
- Work every button and control while it is submerged so trapped saltwater flushes out from under the shafts. SeaLife's own guidance calls for pressing each button several times during the rinse.
- Dry the outside completely before opening, especially the seam. Water sitting on the lip runs straight in when the door swings.
- Open in a dry, shaded spot with dry hands and a towel underneath.
- Inspect the o-ring again before the next dive, not the night before the next trip.
Between-dive discipline on a boat
If you must swap batteries or cards between dives, do it under a towel, out of spray and wind, with the housing exterior fully dry. On a rough day it is better to shoot a shorter second dive on the battery you have than to open a housing in blowing salt spray.
Storage and servicing
Long-term storage kills more o-rings than diving does. An o-ring left compressed for months takes a permanent set and no longer seals reliably.
- Store the housing unlatched so the seal is not under compression. SeaLife instructs owners to leave the housing open when not in use.
- Store it dry, out of sunlight, at stable room temperature. UV and heat degrade elastomers.
- Remove batteries from the camera and from any accessory that lives in the case.
- Have the housing serviced periodically. Ikelite recommends returning housings for factory service every one to two years depending on care and use.

What to do if your housing floods
Speed matters more than anything else here, and saltwater is far more destructive than fresh water.
- Ascend safely. Normal rate, normal safety stop.
- Open the housing immediately once you are out of the water and remove the camera or phone.
- Remove the battery and memory card at once. Corrosion accelerates while current is flowing.
- Rinse saltwater-flooded electronics in clean fresh or distilled water. This sounds wrong, but leaving salt to dry inside the circuitry causes more damage than a controlled fresh rinse.
- Dry slowly and thoroughly in a cool, ventilated place with desiccant. Do not use a hair dryer or direct heat.
- Do not power the device on until it is unquestionably dry, days rather than hours, and have it professionally assessed.
- Retire the o-ring and inspect the entire housing before it goes back in the water.
Frequently asked questions
Should I grease my underwater housing o-ring?
Only if the manufacturer says so, and only with the lubricant they specify. Ikelite states that most of their housing o-rings need no lubricant at all, while SeaLife instructs owners of several models not to grease the o-ring. Grease is not what makes the seal; compression is.
How often should I replace my housing o-ring?
Replace it immediately if it is damaged, deformed or hardened, and after any flood. Annual replacement of the main o-ring is common practice among frequent shooters and is inexpensive relative to the camera it protects.
Can I test my housing without the camera inside?
Yes, and you should. Seal the empty housing, add a tissue or paper towel inside so any moisture is obvious, and soak it in a rinse tank for several minutes or take it on a shallow dive. This is the cheapest insurance in underwater photography.
Why does my housing fog up on the first dive of a trip?
Humid air sealed inside condenses when the housing cools underwater. Seal in air-conditioned air, add a desiccant packet, and let the housing stabilize in the shade before entry.
Is a leak alarm worth it?
