Product Information

The Oceanic Photon Air Men's BCD with Color Kit is a compact, low-profile back-inflation buoyancy compensator built around a modular central frame for travel and day-boat diving, with quick-dry 3D mesh and UV-resistant 420D nylon materials, technopolymer hardware and a men's specific harness in XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL. It carries 25 to 34 lb (11 to 15 kg) of lift depending on size and weighs 6.4 lb (3 kg) in XL/2XL.

Who it is for

This is the Photon for the diver who flies to the water or dives from a day boat and wants a light travel setup with integrated weight and trim control. The minimalist quick-dry harness and technopolymer hardware keep weight and drag down, while the back-inflation wing keeps the chest clear and encourages a natural horizontal position. Divers who want higher lift and stainless hardware instead should look at the Photon Pro; the Air is the lighter, travel-oriented option in the same line.

Key details

  • Lift: 25 lb (11 kg) in XS/SM, 34 lb (15 kg) in MD/LG and XL/XXL
  • BC weight: 6.4 lb (3 kg) in Men's XL/XXL
  • Ditchable weight: 2 x 5 lb (2.3 kg) pockets; trim weight: 2 x 5 lb (2.3 kg) pockets, 20 lb (9 kg) total
  • Materials: 3D mesh construction with UV-resistant 420D nylon
  • Hardware and TankTamer tank band: technopolymer
  • Infinite harness adjustment with ergonomic lumbar support

Compatibility and sizing

Men's fits are offered in XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL, with a women's specific version available in the same three size ranges. The TankTamer quick-adjust band makes switching between steel and aluminum cylinders fast. The modular frame accepts Oceanic Photon accessories including Color Kits, the Dive Housing Holster, Utility Pocket and Crotch Strap, and components are serviceable and interchangeable. Color choices here are Black, White, Blue, Aqua and Pink.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

How much lift does the Oceanic Photon Air Men's BCD have?

Lift depends on size. The Men's XS/SM provides 25 lb (11 kg) of lift, while both the MD/LG and XL/XXL provide 34 lb (15 kg). That lift range suits recreational diving, with the Photon Pro available for higher capacity. If you dive heavy steel cylinders or thick exposure protection and want more lift plus stainless hardware, the Photon Pro is the higher-capacity option in the same line.

What is the difference between the Photon Air and the Photon Pro?

Both are back-inflation BCDs on the same modular Photon platform, but the Air is the lighter, travel-oriented build. The Air uses technopolymer hardware and weighs 6.4 lb (3 kg) in Men's XL/XXL with 25 to 34 lb of lift, while the Pro uses stainless steel hardware, weighs 8.4 lb (3.8 kg) and offers 34 to 42 lb of lift with 30 lb of weight capacity.

How much weight can the Photon Air carry?

Total weight capacity is 20 lb (9 kg). That is split between two 5 lb (2.3 kg) ditchable pockets, giving 10 lb you can release in an emergency, and two 5 lb (2.3 kg) trim pockets that help balance your position in the water. If you need more lead than that, carry the remainder on a weight belt.

Which accessories fit the Photon Air?

The Photon Air uses a modular central frame that accepts Oceanic Photon accessories, including Color Kits, the Dive Housing Holster, the Utility Pocket and a Crotch Strap, so you can expand the BCD over time. Components are serviceable and interchangeable. This listing is offered in Black, White, Blue, Aqua and Pink in sizes XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL.
