Choosing Loft and Layering

Undergarments are rated loosely by weight and loft. Lighter fleece or hybrid layers suit temperate water and divers who run warm; heavy Thinsulate or high-loft synthetic suits are for genuinely cold water and long bottom times. Match to the coldest diving you'll realistically do, since you can always vent a warm suit but you can't add insulation at depth.

A base layer under the main undergarment is worth having regardless of loft. It moves moisture off the skin, which matters more than most divers expect — sweat during the walk to the water will chill you throughout the dive if it has nowhere to go.

What to Check Before Ordering

• Compatibility with your suit's size. A high-loft undergarment needs room. If your drysuit was sized around thin layers, a heavy undersuit won't fit inside it.
• Compression resistance. Loft compresses at depth and insulation drops with it. Materials rated for compression resistance hold warmth better on deep dives.
• Socks and boot fit. Undergarment socks add bulk inside attached drysuit boots. Confirm the combination still fits.
• Fit at wrists and neck. Bulk at the seals interferes with sealing. Undergarments are cut to stop short of the seal area for this reason.

How do I know what loft I need?

Work from your coldest realistic water temperature and typical dive duration. A 45-minute dive at 10°C needs considerably more insulation than a 25-minute dive at the same temperature. If you're between options, size up on warmth — an overly warm diver can vent; a cold one ends the dive.

Will a heavier undergarment fit inside my existing drysuit?

Only if the suit was sized with room for it. Drysuits are fitted around intended undergarments, so a suit sized over light layers will be too tight over a high-loft undersuit. Contact us with your suit model and size and we'll advise.

Do undergarments lose warmth with use?

Loft compresses over time with repeated use and washing, gradually reducing insulation. Items graded Open Box or Like New have seen little or none of this. Lower grades may have lost some loft, reflected in the price.
