Open Box Rash Guards — Sun Protection and Sting Defence
A rash guard does three jobs that matter more than most divers give it credit for: it blocks UV during long surface intervals on a boat, it prevents the chafing that a wetsuit causes over hours of diving, and it provides a barrier against jellyfish stings and hydroid contact on tropical reefs. In warm water it's often the only exposure protection needed.
This collection covers short and long sleeve rash guards in men's, women's, and unisex cuts. Every item is inspected and graded before listing; see Product Conditions for full definitions.
Understanding UPF Ratings
UPF measures how much UV a fabric blocks. UPF 50+ blocks roughly 98% of UV radiation, which is the standard for quality dive rash guards. Unlike sunscreen it doesn't wash off, wear away, or need reapplication — and it doesn't contribute chemicals to the reef, which is why many dive destinations now actively encourage it over sunscreen.
How It Should Fit
Rash guards are cut close to the body. A loose one bunches under a wetsuit and defeats the anti-chafe purpose entirely, and drags in the water when worn alone. Snug but not compressive is right — you should be able to move freely without the fabric pulling.
Long sleeves give more coverage for sun and stings; short sleeves are cooler on the boat between dives. Many divers own both.
Worn Alone or as a Layer
- Alone — tropical diving and snorkeling above roughly 29°C / 85°F
- Under a wetsuit — prevents chafing at the neck, shoulders, and underarms, and makes the suit noticeably easier to don
- Surface intervals — UV protection on deck without the heat of a wetsuit

Frequently Asked Questions
What does UPF 50+ actually mean?
The fabric blocks approximately 98% of UV radiation. Unlike sunscreen, it doesn't degrade over a day in the water or need reapplying, and it protects consistently across the whole covered area.
Will a rash guard keep me warm?
Only marginally. It reduces evaporative cooling on the surface and adds a very thin barrier in the water, but it isn't thermal protection. If you're cold, you need neoprene.
Does it really help with donning a wetsuit?
Yes, noticeably. The smooth fabric lets neoprene slide over your skin instead of gripping it, which makes a tight suit considerably easier to get into and out of.
Do open box rash guards come with a warranty?
No. Open box and used products are not eligible for manufacturer warranty coverage.
