Checking a Used Gauge

Two things to verify on any analog gauge:

• Zero return. With no pressure applied, the needle should rest fully at zero. A needle sitting off-zero indicates a mechanism that has drifted and needs service.
• Lens and housing. Look for cracks in the lens and any sign of moisture or fogging inside, which means the seal has failed.

On a compass, check for bubbles in the capsule. A bubble means fluid has escaped through a failed seal, and the card can no longer settle correctly — that compass should be replaced rather than dived.

Compass Hemisphere Matters

Earth's magnetic field angles into the ground at different inclinations depending on hemisphere, and compass cards are counterweighted to compensate. A card balanced for the Northern Hemisphere will tilt and bind in southern waters, and vice versa. Check that a used compass is balanced for where you actually dive.

Console or Wrist?

Consoles group pressure, depth, and often a compass on one hose-mounted unit — harder to lose and everything in one place. Wrist-mounted instruments give a cleaner rig profile and are easier to read without repositioning. Both approaches work; it's largely habit and preference.

How do I know if a used gauge is accurate?

Check that the needle returns fully to zero when depressurised. Then compare its reading against a known-good gauge on the same cylinder. Any significant discrepancy or a sticking needle means it needs service before use.

Why does a bubble in a compass matter?

The capsule is fluid-filled to damp the card's movement so it settles quickly and reads steadily. A bubble means the seal has failed and fluid has escaped, so the card can no longer move and settle properly. Bearings from it aren't trustworthy.

Do I still need analog gauges if I have a dive computer?

Not strictly, but many divers carry them as backup precisely because they fail differently — no battery to die, no firmware to corrupt. In technical diving, where surfacing immediately may not be an option, redundant instrumentation is standard practice.
