Product Information

The Hollis Elite ST Travel System is a complete single tank backplate and wing BCD built for warm water and travel diving, pairing the ultra streamlined ST22 wing (22 lbs / 10 kg lift) with the Aluminum Backplate 2.0 (EN AW 6061, 3 mm, 1.5 lbs / 1 kg), Delrin cam bands and the Backplate Backpad 2.0. Instead of a solo harness it uses the adjustable Elite 2 harness, so it feels like a full-featured BCD on a backplate platform.

Who it is for

This system suits the recreational single tank diver moving from a traditional jacket or back-inflate BCD into a backplate setup, and the traveling diver who wants minimum weight in the bag. The adjustable Elite 2 harness keeps a familiar full-featured BCD feel, while the backplate adds stability and a platform you can customize as your diving style changes. Divers heading into colder water can choose the standard ST Elite System instead, which uses the ST35 wing (35 lbs / 16 kg lift), Stainless Backplate 2.0 and stainless cam bands.

Key details

  • ST22 wing: 22 lbs (10 kg) lift, HD laminated 1680D Cordura outer shell over a 420 nylon bladder.
  • Welded flange with one-piece retainer, serviceable without tools.
  • Offset elbow clears the tank valve and streamlines hose routing; lower left pull relief valve.
  • Aluminum Backplate 2.0: EN AW 6061, 3 mm, hard anodized marine black, 1.5 lbs (1 kg).
  • Cam band slots and a tank cradle are built into the backplate.

Compatibility and sizing

The Elite 2 harness is offered in XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL. Delrin cam bands mount through the backplate slots for single cylinder use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

What is the difference between the ST Elite Travel System and the standard ST Elite System?

The Travel System is built for warm water and travel, using the ultra streamlined ST22 wing with 22 lbs (10 kg) of lift, the Aluminum Backplate 2.0 and Delrin cam bands. The standard ST Elite System is aimed at colder water and uses the go anywhere ST35 wing with 35 lbs (16 kg) of lift, the Stainless Backplate 2.0 and stainless cam bands. Both use the Elite 2 harness and Backplate Backpad 2.0.

How much does the aluminum backplate weigh compared to the stainless version?

The Aluminum Backplate 2.0 in the Travel System is EN AW 6061 aluminum, 3 mm thick with a hard anodized marine black finish, and weighs 1.5 lbs (1 kg). The Stainless Backplate 2.0 used in the standard ST Elite System is 4 mm AISI 304 stainless steel at 6.5 lbs (3 kg).

What sizes does the Elite 2 harness come in?

The Hollis Elite ST Travel System is offered in three harness sizes: XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL, listed under SKUs 208.8002.022, 208.8003.022 and 208.8005.022. The Elite 2 harness is adjustable, and Hollis offers it in multiple sizes. Call 888-701-4017 if you want help choosing between two sizes.

Can the ST22 wing be serviced without tools?

Yes. The wing uses a welded flange with a one-piece retainer and is serviceable without tools. The wing also has an offset elbow that clears the tank valve for cleaner hose routing and a lower left pull relief valve for dumping air.

Review summary

5.0 7 ratings across the web

All five ratings here are positive, and reviewers agree the backplate and wing setup works well in the water. Owners point to more mobility, a tank that stays secure, and D-rings you can move to wherever you want them. One diver called the build quality excellent. Good to know: it carries a tech reputation, but a reviewer wished they had owned it back during open water training. It suits divers who want an adjustable harness, recreational or technical.
