Product Information

The Hollis ST Elite System is a complete single-tank backplate and wing setup that pairs the adjustable Elite 2 harness with a backplate, giving the comfort of a full-featured BCD with the trim and stability of a plate-and-wing rig. It is offered in two configurations: the standard ST Elite with a 35 lb (16 kg) lift ST35 wing, Stainless Backplate 2.0 and stainless cam bands, and the ST Elite Travel System with a 22 lb (10 kg) lift ST22 wing, Aluminum Backplate 2.0 and Delrin cam bands.

Who it is for

This system is aimed at the recreational single-tank diver moving over from a traditional jacket or back-inflate BCD who wants backplate stability without giving up a comfortable, fully adjustable Elite 2 harness. The standard build with the ST35 wing and stainless plate suits cold water diving with thicker exposure protection, while the Travel build with the ST22 wing and aluminum plate is the choice for warm water and flying with your own gear. Because it is a modular platform, it also appeals to divers whose configuration may change over time.

Key details

  • Wing outer shell in HD laminated 1680D Cordura over a 420 nylon internal bladder.
  • Welded flange with a one-piece retainer, so the wing is serviceable without tools.
  • Offset elbow clears the tank valve and streamlines hose routing; lower left pull relief valve.
  • Stainless Backplate 2.0: AISI 304, 4 mm, sandblasted, electropolished and chemically passivated, 6.5 lb (3 kg).
  • Aluminum Backplate 2.0: EN AW 6061, 3 mm, hard anodized marine black, 1.5 lb (1 kg).
  • Cam band slots and a tank cradle are built into the backplate.

Compatibility and sizing

The Elite 2 harness is adjustable and offered in multiple sizes, listed here as XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL. Both configurations include the Backplate Backpad 2.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

What is the difference between the standard ST Elite and the ST Elite Travel System?

The standard ST Elite is built for colder water and uses the ST35 wing with 35 lb (16 kg) of lift, the Stainless Backplate 2.0 and stainless cam bands. The ST Elite Travel System is built for warm water and flying, using the streamlined ST22 wing with 22 lb (10 kg) of lift, the Aluminum Backplate 2.0 and Delrin cam bands. Both include the Elite 2 harness and Backplate Backpad 2.0.

How much does the Hollis backplate weigh?

The Stainless Backplate 2.0 is AISI 304 stainless steel, 4 mm thick, and weighs 6.5 lb (3 kg), which counts toward your ballast and helps with trim in cold water with thick exposure protection. The Aluminum Backplate 2.0 is EN AW 6061, 3 mm thick with a hard anodized marine black finish, and weighs 1.5 lb (1 kg), making it the lighter option for travel.

Does the ST Elite wing need special tools to service?

No. The wing uses a welded flange with a one-piece retainer, so the bladder can be accessed and serviced without tools. The outer shell is HD laminated 1680D Cordura with a 420 nylon internal bladder. The wing also has an offset elbow that clears the tank valve and regulator, plus a lower left pull relief valve.

What size ST Elite System should I order?

The Elite 2 harness is adjustable and the system is offered in three size ranges: XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL. Choose the range that covers your torso length and the exposure suit you dive most, since a drysuit adds bulk. If you are between sizes or unsure, call DiveCatalog.com at 888-701-4017 and we will walk you through the fit.

Reviewers consistently report this backplate and wing setup performs well in the water, with several noting more mobility and a secure tank system. Divers used it in cold Pacific Northwest water, the Great Lakes, and open water certification dives. A couple of reviewers mention a short adjustment period before it feels natural. Buyers also found the unit matched its description on arrival. It suits divers ready to move into a backplate and wing system, including students finishing certification and cold water divers wanting long service.
