Diving With Sharks: A Marine Biologist's Guide to Species, Behavior, and Safe Encounters

Most divers remember their first shark. Mine was a nurse shark wedged under a ledge in the Florida Keys, so uninterested in me that it never opened an eye. That gap — between what we expect from sharks and what they actually do — is where most bad diving decisions get made. Divers either avoid sites where sharks are common, or they crowd an animal that is clearly asking for space.

This guide covers what the data says about risk, which species you are realistically going to meet, how to read shark body language before it escalates, and how to make your encounters useful to science rather than stressful for the animal.

What the numbers actually say about shark risk

The International Shark Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History investigated 105 alleged shark-human interactions worldwide in 2025 and confirmed 65 unprovoked bites. Twelve were fatal. That fatality figure was unusually high — roughly double the ten-year average of six — but the total number of unprovoked bites sat below the ten-year average of 72.

That is 65 incidents worldwide, spread across every surfer, swimmer, snorkeler, spearfisher, and scuba diver who entered the ocean that year. Scuba divers account for a small share of the total, and a substantial portion of diver-involved incidents land in ISAF's separate provoked category — 29 cases in 2025 — meaning a person initiated the contact, usually by spearing fish, feeding, or grabbing.

The traffic runs overwhelmingly in the other direction. A 2024 global assessment published in Science estimated that fisheries killed roughly 80 million sharks per year, about 25 million of them threatened species. Once sharks landed without species-level identification are included, the estimate rises to more than 100 million in a single year. Anti-finning regulations spread widely over the study period without reducing that total.

The practical takeaway for divers: your safety planning should focus on gas management, current, and thermal stress. Sharks belong in the "manage your behavior" column, not the "existential threat" column.

Sharks divers are most likely to encounter

Nurse sharks

Bottom-dwelling, blunt-headed, and largely nocturnal, nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) spend daylight hours resting under ledges and in sand channels across the tropical western Atlantic and eastern Pacific. They are the species most divers meet first because they hold still. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern globally, but the western Atlantic subpopulation is assessed as Vulnerable with a declining trend.

They are docile until handled. Nurse sharks have small, densely packed teeth and a powerful suction feeding mechanism, and the documented bites almost universally involve someone touching or pulling on a resting animal. Photograph them from a respectful distance and they will ignore you entirely.

Caribbean and grey reef sharks

Requiem sharks in the genus Carcharhinus are the classic "reef shark" silhouette — streamlined, curious, and patrolling. Caribbean reef sharks (C. perezi) are common on Bahamian and Caribbean walls and are assessed as Near Threatened. Grey reef sharks (C. amblyrhynchos) fill the same niche across the Indo-Pacific.

These are the species whose body language matters most, and I cover that in detail below. They are not aggressive toward divers by default, but they are territorial enough to communicate discomfort clearly.

Whale sharks

The largest fish in the ocean is a filter feeder that poses no threat and is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with a global population decline exceeding 50% over roughly the last 75 years. Whale shark aggregations are seasonal and predictable enough to plan a trip around — Isla Mujeres, Ningaloo, Donsol, and the Gulf of Tadjoura among them.

Most host countries enforce minimum approach distances and limits on the number of swimmers per animal. Western Australia's legislated Ningaloo protocol — widely copied elsewhere — requires swimmers to stay at least 3 meters (about 10 feet) from the body and 4 meters (about 13 feet) from the tail. Rules vary by country, so check before you travel, and avoid operators who treat them as optional.

Temperate-water species

Cold-water divers get their own cast. Off Southern California, leopard sharks aggregate in the warm shallows at La Jolla Shores from roughly June through October — a school made up almost entirely of pregnant females — while horn sharks shelter in kelp holdfasts and rocky crevices, and blue sharks (Prionace glauca) show up on offshore blue-water dives. Leopard and horn sharks are small, benthic, and completely indifferent to divers. Blue sharks are inquisitive and will approach — the appropriate response is to stay vertical, keep facing them, and let them satisfy their curiosity.

How to read shark body language

Sharks telegraph discomfort before they act, and the grey reef shark's threat display is the best-documented example in the literature. A shark that feels pressured will raise its snout, drop its pectoral fins, arch its back, and swim in an exaggerated, rolling figure-eight pattern. The display intensifies if the diver keeps closing distance or if the animal's escape routes are blocked by terrain or other sharks.

Researchers describe these displays as defensive rather than predatory — a rapidly approaching diver reads as a threat, not as prey. The correct response is immediate and unambiguous:

  • Stop advancing. Back off along the shark's escape route, not into it.
  • Get vertical in the water column and keep the animal in view.
  • Move to a wall, reef, or your buddy so your back is covered.
  • Ascend calmly if the behavior continues, maintaining a safe ascent rate.

Cornering a shark in a cave, swim-through, or narrow canyon is the single most reliable way to provoke a display. Give animals a clear exit and the interaction almost always stays uneventful.

Behavior that keeps encounters uneventful

Chasing a shark for a photograph ends the encounter and stresses the animal. Holding position and letting curiosity do the work produces both better images and better science.

A few habits worth building:

  • Control your buoyancy first. A diver flailing to hold depth is unpredictable, and unpredictable is what sharks respond to.
  • Do not touch, ride, or block. This is basic, and it is still the leading cause of provoked incidents.
  • Be deliberate about baited dives. Provisioned shark dives can fund local conservation and shift community attitudes, but they also alter natural behavior. If you do them, choose operators with published protocols and no hand-feeding.
  • Separate spearfishing from sightseeing. A stringer of bleeding fish changes the calculation entirely. Land your catch promptly rather than towing it.
  • Skip the shiny jewelry. Dangling reflective metal in low visibility resembles fish scales closely enough that it is not worth the debate.

Gear that actually helps

A dive light is the most useful piece of shark-encounter equipment you can carry, and not for defense. Water absorbs red wavelengths within the first few meters of depth, so a shark viewed at 60 feet in ambient light is a gray shape. A focused beam restores color and contrast, letting you resolve fin markings, claspers, scarring, and species-diagnostic features that ambient light erases. Two things worth saying plainly.
