Product Information
The OMS Stainless Steel Backplate with SmartStream Harness and Crotch Strap is a technical diving harness system built around a 316 stainless steel backplate that adds roughly 5 lb (2.3 kg) of ballast high and centered on the back, paired with the SmartStream continuous-webbing harness and a sewn 2 in crotch strap. SmartStream lets you pull the waist strap forward to instantly set shoulder-strap position as you don the rig, which solves the usual fussiness of fixed-webbing harnesses.
Who it is for
This is for backplate-and-wing divers, from single-tank recreational setups to technical and DPV diving, who want the trim benefit of steel ballast carried on the plate rather than on the hips. The harness accepts OMS weight pockets or a canister light, and the crotch strap carries a dedicated 2 in DPV/scooter D-ring, so scooter divers and anyone who tows or clips a tow cord has a purpose-built attachment point.
Key details
- 316 stainless steel backplate, approximately 5 lb (2.3 kg)
- 11.5 ft (3.5 m) of 2 in (5.1 cm) nylon webbing in a continuous run
- Three 316 stainless steel D-rings with weight stops: two at chest level, one at the waist, repositionable
- 2 in sewn nylon crotch strap with a 2 in DPV/scooter D-ring
- 22 mounting holes plus 1 in and 2 in slots for accessories
Compatibility and sizing
The continuous 11.5 ft (3.5 m) webbing is cut and routed to the diver for trim-to-fit sizing. The plate works with standard wings and single tank adapters. OMS weight pockets and a canister light mount directly to the SmartStream webbing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should a scuba BCD fit?
A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.
How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?
Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.
Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?
Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.
How do I pack a BCD for travel?
Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.
When does a BCD need to be serviced?
Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.
What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?
A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.
Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?
Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.
What makes the SmartStream harness different from a standard continuous-webbing harness?
SmartStream keeps the simplicity of a continuous 2 in webbing run but adds an adjustment method: pulling the waist strap forward instantly sets shoulder-strap position as you don the rig. That addresses the main complaint about fixed-webbing harnesses, which have to be pre-cut and then left alone. It also positions OMS weight pockets or a canister light where you want them on the webbing.
How much weight does the stainless steel backplate remove from my weight belt?
The stainless steel plate weighs about 5 lb (2.3 kg), so it can replace roughly that amount of lead, carried high and centered on your back instead of on your hips. Final ballast still depends on your exposure suit, cylinder and wing, so do a proper weight check in the water before committing to a configuration.
Does this backplate come with D-rings and a crotch strap, or do I buy those separately?
Both are included. The package ships with the stainless steel backplate, the SmartStream harness webbing, three 316 stainless steel D-rings, the 2 in sewn crotch strap with its 2 in DPV/scooter D-ring, six small EPDM bands, one large rubber loop and an OMS stainless steel buckle. You supply the wing and, if needed, a single tank adapter.
What is the 2 in D-ring on the crotch strap for?
It is a dedicated DPV/scooter attachment point. Divers clip a diver propulsion vehicle tow cord to the crotch strap D-ring so the pull comes from your center of mass rather than from a shoulder ring, which keeps you in trim and keeps your hands free. It is also a convenient low clip point for a stage or scooter leash.
