Product Information

The Aqua Lung Impulse Classic Flex Dive Snorkel is a two-valve, flex-barrel snorkel built for scuba diving, snorkeling and free diving, with an upper valve that directs most surface water out before it reaches the mouthpiece and a lower drain valve for anything that gets past it. Part of a line introduced in 1989 and long the best-selling snorkel in the world, it offers four colorways: Black, Black/Yellow, Black/White and Black/Blue.

Who it is for

This is a snorkel for the diver who wants one tube that covers everything: surface swims on a scuba dive, a day of snorkeling on the reef, or breath-hold and free diving sessions. On scuba, the flex section lets the mouthpiece drop away from your face while you breathe from the regulator. Snorkelers and free divers benefit from the two-valve layout, which directs most water out before it reaches the mouthpiece.

Key details

  • Two valves: an upper valve diverts most water out if a wave breaks over the snorkel, and a lower valve drains water that gets past it.
  • Easy clearing: the reservoir below the mouthpiece clears with a gentle puff of breath.
  • Flex barrel: the flex section positions easily and lets the mouthpiece drop away when it is not in use.
  • Colors and item numbers: Black (SN3110101), Black/Yellow (SN3110107), Black/White (SN3110109), Black/Blue (SN3110140).

Compatibility and sizing

The Impulse Classic Flex is offered in four colorways; color choice is the only selection to make.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a dry, semi-dry, and classic snorkel?

A classic open-top snorkel is a simple tube, the most reliable design, but it takes on water when a wave passes or you duck under. A semi-dry snorkel adds a splash guard at the top that deflects surface chop, though it still floods if fully submerged. A dry snorkel adds a float-operated valve that closes the top when submerged and keeps the tube mostly dry, at the cost of more moving parts and a little extra bulk and buoyancy.

What does a purge valve on a snorkel do?

A purge valve is a one-way valve in a sump below the mouthpiece that lets water you blow out drain away instead of sitting in the tube. It makes clearing easier, since a short sharp breath clears the snorkel with much less effort. The tradeoff is one more part that can foul with sand or grit, so rinse it and check that it seats cleanly.

How do I attach a snorkel to my mask?

Snorkels attach on the left side of the mask with a keeper that grips the mask strap, leaving your right side clear for the regulator hose. Position it so the mouthpiece reaches your mouth with the tube running alongside your head, without twisting the strap or pulling the mask skirt off its seal. Many keepers are quick-release, so you can remove the snorkel without disassembling the mask.

Do scuba divers need a snorkel?

It depends on your training agency, the dive operation, and the diving you do, since some courses and operators require one. A snorkel lets you breathe at the surface without using tank gas, which matters on a long surface swim or in chop while waiting for the boat. Follow your instructor's or operator's requirements, and consider a folding snorkel if you want one stowed rather than on your mask.

What size or shape of snorkel should I choose?

A snorkel that is too long or too wide increases the volume of air you rebreathe and makes clearing harder, which is why recreational snorkels cluster around similar lengths and bore sizes. A flexible lower section lets the mouthpiece drop away from your face while you are breathing from the regulator. Mouthpiece comfort matters more than any other feature, so pick one you can hold without jaw fatigue.

How do I care for a snorkel?

Rinse the tube, mouthpiece, and purge valve in fresh water after each dive day, then let it drain and dry fully, because standing salt water in the sump grows mold. Check the mouthpiece for splits and the purge valve for trapped grit, both of which are inexpensive to replace. Store it out of direct sun so the silicone stays soft and clear.

How does the Impulse Classic Flex keep water out?

It uses two valves. If a wave breaks over the top of the snorkel, the upper valve directs most of the water out before it can reach the mouthpiece. Any water that does get past that first valve drains out through the lower valve. The reservoir below the mouthpiece clears with a gentle puff of breath.

Is the Aqua Lung Impulse Classic Flex a dry snorkel?

Aqua Lung describes it as a two-valve dive snorkel: an upper valve diverts most water and a lower valve drains the rest. The upper valve diverts most water away before it reaches the mouthpiece when a wave breaks over the tube, and the lower drain valve sheds whatever gets past it. The flex section allows easy positioning and lets the mouthpiece drop away when not in use.

What colors does the Impulse Classic Flex come in?

Four colorways are published: Black (item SN3110101), Black/Yellow (SN3110107), Black/White (SN3110109) and Black/Blue (SN3110140). Four colorways are published: Black (SN3110101), Black/Yellow (SN3110107), Black/White (SN3110109) and Black/Blue (SN3110140).

Can I use this snorkel for both scuba diving and free diving?

Yes. The Impulse Classic Flex is built for scuba, snorkeling and free diving. On scuba, the flex section lets the mouthpiece drop away from your face while you breathe from the regulator. For snorkeling and breath-hold diving, the two-valve design and easy-clearing reservoir keep surface chop manageable.
