Product Information

The OMS Performance Mono Wing is a donut-style single-tank buoyancy wing for divers running a backplate and harness, published in 27 lbs (about 12.5 kg) and 32 lbs (about 14.5 kg) lift, with a built-in tank stabilizer system so a soft single tank adaptor is not required. The donut air cell lets gas move quickly and easily from one side of the cell to the other.

Who it is for

It suits recreational through technical divers who dive a single cylinder on a backplate and harness or IQ Backpack setup and want a streamlined back-mounted air cell instead of a jacket. The Performance Mono is the single-tank member of the OMS Performance Wing family, which also includes the Performance Double for twin-cylinder diving, and it is the wing used in BtS/OMS complete systems such as the Comfort Harness III Signature System, Smartstream Signature System, IQ Lite and IQ Lite CB Signature Systems in 27 lb and 32 lb lift.

Key details

  • Donut-shaped air cell for quick, easy side-to-side gas movement.
  • Two lift options: 27 lbs (about 12.5 kg) and 32 lbs (about 14.5 kg).
  • Built-in tank stabilizer system on the Mono air cell, so no soft single tank adaptor is needed.
  • Mounts to standard backplate and harness assemblies.

Compatibility and sizing

Choose by lift (27 lb or 32 lb) and color. This listing offers Black, Yellow/Black, Navy/Black, Gray/Black, Pink/Black, Red/Black, Lava Orange/Black, Miami Blue/Black, Lizard Green/Black, Natural Green/Black, Purple/Black and Camouflage/Black. For sidemount use, the OMS Sidemount Tech or Rec Adaptor is suitable with any harness, backplate, IQ Backpack and the OMS Performance Mono, Deep Ocean or Tesseract wings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

Do I need a single tank adapter with the OMS Performance Mono Wing?

No. OMS states that a soft single tank adaptor is not required when you use the Performance Mono wing, because the air cell has a built-in tank stabilizer system that performs the same function. That lets you mount the wing between your cylinder and backplate on a standard backplate and harness system without adding a separate adapter pad to the rig.

What is the difference between the Performance Mono and the Performance Double wing?

They are the two wing types in the OMS Performance Wing family. The Performance Mono is designed for single-tank diving and is published in 27 lbs (about 12.5 kg) and 32 lbs (about 14.5 kg) lift, while the Performance Double is intended for double tanks and covers the higher published lift values of 45 lbs (about 20.4 kg) and 60 lbs (about 27.1 kg).

What does a donut-shaped wing do differently?

A donut air cell is continuous all the way around, so OMS notes that air moves quickly and easily from one side of the cell to the other. Because gas is not divided into separate lobes, it follows you as you roll or change attitude, which helps keep buoyancy predictable in a back-mounted single-tank backplate and harness configuration.

Can the Performance Mono Wing be used for sidemount?

Yes, with the correct adaptor. OMS states that the Sidemount Tech or Rec Adaptor is suitable for use with any harness, backplate, IQ Backpack and the OMS Performance Mono, Deep Ocean or Tesseract wings. Select the lift you need, 27 lb or 32 lb, and contact us at 888-701-4017 if you want help confirming the adaptor choice for your rig.

Review summary

4.6 21 ratings across the web

Written reviews are still few for this one. The OMS Performance Mono Wing is a single-tank, donut-style wing made for backplate and harness setups. Its circular bladder lets air move freely from side to side, which supports balanced trim and reduces trapped gas. It has a rugged outer shell with a replaceable inner bladder, reinforced attachment points, streamlined inflator routing, and practical dump valve placement. The low-profile shape keeps drag down. It suits recreational and technical divers diving a single cylinder on a backplate and harness.
