Product Information

The Scubapro Hybrid 1mm Cargo Short Men's is a 1mm X-Foam neoprene and stretch nylon short that can be worn on its own or pulled on over a dive suit, with large hook and loop cargo pockets and an adjustable waist belt. It is built for divers, snorkelers and watersports users who want light warmth, abrasion protection and real storage in sizes S to 3XL.

Who it is for

These shorts suit divers and snorkelers who want essential insulation without the bulk of a full suit, and they work equally well for paddleboarding and swimming. Worn alone they add light warmth and an abrasion-resistant seat panel; worn over a dive suit they add pocket space. The quick-drying micro-plush interior absorbs less water, so the shorts stay comfortable between sessions.

Key details

  • 1mm X-Foam neoprene with stretchy nylon, black.
  • Large volume cargo pockets with internal bungees and D-ring attachment points.
  • Hook and loop pocket flaps that can be worked while wearing gloves.
  • External zippered pocket for valuables, plus large-diameter eyelets for rapid drainage.
  • Adjustable waist belt with squeeze buckle closure.
  • Abrasion-resistant fabric on the seat panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a wetsuit fit?

A wetsuit should feel snug everywhere, with no loose pockets at the lower back, armpits, or behind the knees where water can collect and flush. It will feel tighter than normal clothing on land, which is expected, because the suit works by holding a thin layer of water that your body warms. If you cannot take a full breath or the neck chokes you it is too small, and if you can pinch loose folds of neoprene it is too big.

What do you wear under a wetsuit?

Most divers wear a swimsuit, a rash guard, or a thin dive-specific base layer under a wetsuit. A slick base layer makes a tight suit much easier to pull on and cuts down chafing at the neck, shoulders, and underarms. Avoid thick cotton clothing, which soaks up water, bunches, and makes you colder rather than warmer.

How do you put on a tight wetsuit?

Work upward in small sections, pulling a little neoprene at a time rather than yanking on one spot, and get the suit fully seated at the ankles and knees before working on the hips and shoulders. A plastic bag over each foot and hand, or wetting the suit first, helps it slide into place. Grip with flat palms rather than fingertips, since fingernails are the most common cause of torn neoprene.

Does a thicker wetsuit mean a warmer wetsuit?

As a general rule, thicker neoprene insulates more, so a higher millimeter rating is warmer in the same conditions. Warmth also depends heavily on fit, suit style, seam construction, whether you add a hood, boots, and gloves, how long the dive is, and your own cold tolerance, so two divers in identical suits can feel very differently. Use thickness as a starting point and refine it against your local conditions and personal experience.

How do I care for and store a wetsuit?

Rinse it inside and out in fresh water after every dive day, and use a wetsuit-specific wash occasionally to control odor. Dry it inside-out first and then flip it, always out of direct sunlight, because UV and heat break down neoprene faster than anything else. Store it hanging on a wide-shouldered hanger or laid flat rather than folded, so you do not set permanent creases.

How long does a wetsuit last?

Lifespan depends far more on use and care than on age, so a suit dived hard in sun and chlorine may soften within a couple of seasons while a well-rinsed occasional-use suit can last many years. Signs a suit is finished include compressed neoprene that no longer feels buoyant or warm, splitting seams, and looseness in areas that used to be snug. Repairing small cuts and seam separations early adds meaningfully to a suit's life.

What is the difference between a full suit, a shorty, and wetsuit separates?

A full suit covers arms and legs, a shorty stops at the upper arms and thighs, and separates such as tops, bottoms, and hooded vests layer to add warmth where you want it. Layering a vest or top under a full suit adds core warmth and can extend the range of a suit you already own. Choose based on how much coverage you want, both for warmth and for protection against stings and abrasion.

Can the Scubapro Hybrid Cargo Shorts be worn over a wetsuit?

Yes. Scubapro designs these 1mm shorts to be worn alone or over a dive suit, so you can add pocket storage and seat protection to a suit you already own. The waist uses an adjustable belt with a squeeze buckle, which helps you set the fit over neoprene. If you plan to layer them, account for the thickness of the suit underneath when picking a size.

What pockets and storage do these shorts have?

They have large volume cargo pockets fitted with internal bungees and D-ring attachment points, so small items can be clipped or retained rather than floating free. The pocket flaps close with hook and loop that can be worked while wearing gloves, and there is a separate external zippered pocket for valuables. Large-diameter eyelets allow rapid water drainage.

What sizes and item numbers are available?

Six sizes are published: S (65.355.200), M (65.355.300), L (65.355.400), XL (65.355.500), 2XL (65.355.600) and 3XL (65.355.700). Dimensions scale with size, from 18.11 inches in length and 0.637 lb in size S up to 19.49 inches and 0.734 lb in size 2XL. All sizes are the same black X-Foam neoprene and nylon construction.

Are these shorts only for scuba diving?

No. Scubapro lists them as versatile for diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding and swimming, and the catalog activity category is snorkeling. The 1mm X-Foam neoprene with a quick-drying micro-plush interior adds light warmth without bulk. The seat panel uses abrasion-resistant fabric for added durability. They can be worn alone or over a dive suit.

Review summary

4.4 79 ratings across the web

Reviewers agree the materials and construction are what they expect from Scubapro, and several call out the cargo pockets, including the pockets set into the flaps, plus the added bungee cords and extra storage over the older version. The most common note by far is sizing: these run small, so most buyers went up a size, and more if wearing them over a wetsuit or thermal layer. Good for divers who want a durable short with real pocket space and are willing to size up.

Scubapro Quality

The materials, craftsmanship and quality are all typical of Scubapro. Very good.
One caveat though, these definitely run small. I didn't heed the warning and ordered my normal large size. They were so tight it felt like wearing spandex.
I bought these to wear over Sharkskin chillproof pants which are thin. I could barely pull them over.
If you're wearing these over a 3mm or 5mm suit, you may need even 2x larger.
Definitely order larger than your normal size--even if you're just wearing them alone as shorts. These run snug, no joke. Had to return my first order. DiveCatalog made the process quick and painless, though.

Very warm and comfortable wetsuit diving in freshwater with surface temp of 68 degrees F( 20 degrees C). Somewhat easy to put on when the suit is wet but it is a bit difficult to get off solo if you aren't very flexible in the shoulders and you might need help. With enough wiggling and struggling I was able to strip off the top portion by myself. Dive Catalog customer support was awesome helping me get into the right size. I had ordered both a large and x-large. After going over my sizing numbers they suggested that a Large would fit and it fits perfect other than the skin seals at the wrists and ankles that I need to trim to length. Highly recommend, however if I was going to do it again, I would probably get the back zip version.
