Product Information

The Bare 2mm ExoWear Men's High-Cut Neoprene Scuba Diving Shorts are a neutrally buoyant exposure-protection bottom built for divers and multi-sport water users, combining 2mm ELASTEK full-stretch neoprene waist and leg bands with a 3-layer fabric body and OMNIRED infrared technology. In controlled lab thermal testing, ExoWear slows thermal loss by 36% at 1ATM of pressure compared with diving in a swimsuit and rash guard alone.

Who it is for

These shorts suit the diver who wants warmth and coverage without adding bulk, and the paddler, kayaker or stand up paddle boarder who needs stretch and thermal protection in and around the water. The garment is neutrally buoyant, providing exposure protection and thermal protection. Pair the shorts with the ExoWear Top or ExoWear Vest when you want additional protection.

Key details

  • 2mm ELASTEK full-stretch neoprene waist and leg bands for comfort and sealing.
  • 3-Layer Fabric Technology: outer layer, membrane and inner layer that are water repellant, windproof, breathable, quick-drying, wicking and anti-microbial.
  • OMNIRED infrared technology uses thermo-reactive minerals woven into the fabric to convert body heat into infrared energy and reflect it back to the body.
  • 4-way stretch for more elasticity and breathability than 2-way stretch, with flat seam stitching throughout.
  • High-cut waist and a sewn-in molded closure with embossed grip pattern keep the shorts in place.
  • Color: Black. Sizes S, M, ML, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL. Manufacturer SKU 017104.

Compatibility and sizing

Offered in seven men's sizes from Small through 3X-Large in black. The shorts are designed to layer with the ExoWear Top or ExoWear Vest, so you can build coverage for the conditions you dive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a wetsuit fit?

A wetsuit should feel snug everywhere, with no loose pockets at the lower back, armpits, or behind the knees where water can collect and flush. It will feel tighter than normal clothing on land, which is expected, because the suit works by holding a thin layer of water that your body warms. If you cannot take a full breath or the neck chokes you it is too small, and if you can pinch loose folds of neoprene it is too big.

What do you wear under a wetsuit?

Most divers wear a swimsuit, a rash guard, or a thin dive-specific base layer under a wetsuit. A slick base layer makes a tight suit much easier to pull on and cuts down chafing at the neck, shoulders, and underarms. Avoid thick cotton clothing, which soaks up water, bunches, and makes you colder rather than warmer.

How do you put on a tight wetsuit?

Work upward in small sections, pulling a little neoprene at a time rather than yanking on one spot, and get the suit fully seated at the ankles and knees before working on the hips and shoulders. A plastic bag over each foot and hand, or wetting the suit first, helps it slide into place. Grip with flat palms rather than fingertips, since fingernails are the most common cause of torn neoprene.

Does a thicker wetsuit mean a warmer wetsuit?

As a general rule, thicker neoprene insulates more, so a higher millimeter rating is warmer in the same conditions. Warmth also depends heavily on fit, suit style, seam construction, whether you add a hood, boots, and gloves, how long the dive is, and your own cold tolerance, so two divers in identical suits can feel very differently. Use thickness as a starting point and refine it against your local conditions and personal experience.

How do I care for and store a wetsuit?

Rinse it inside and out in fresh water after every dive day, and use a wetsuit-specific wash occasionally to control odor. Dry it inside-out first and then flip it, always out of direct sunlight, because UV and heat break down neoprene faster than anything else. Store it hanging on a wide-shouldered hanger or laid flat rather than folded, so you do not set permanent creases.

How long does a wetsuit last?

Lifespan depends far more on use and care than on age, so a suit dived hard in sun and chlorine may soften within a couple of seasons while a well-rinsed occasional-use suit can last many years. Signs a suit is finished include compressed neoprene that no longer feels buoyant or warm, splitting seams, and looseness in areas that used to be snug. Repairing small cuts and seam separations early adds meaningfully to a suit's life.

What is the difference between a full suit, a shorty, and wetsuit separates?

A full suit covers arms and legs, a shorty stops at the upper arms and thighs, and separates such as tops, bottoms, and hooded vests layer to add warmth where you want it. Layering a vest or top under a full suit adds core warmth and can extend the range of a suit you already own. Choose based on how much coverage you want, both for warmth and for protection against stings and abrasion.

How much warmer are Bare ExoWear shorts?

Bare states that ExoWear slows thermal loss by 36% at 1ATM of pressure compared with diving in a swimsuit and rash guard alone, based on controlled lab thermal testing. The warmth comes from the 3-layer fabric and OMNIRED infrared technology, which converts outbound body heat into infrared energy and reflects it back to the body; the 2mm ELASTEK bands add comfort and sealing.

What is OMNIRED infrared technology?

OMNIRED is Bare's thermal fabric technology. Thermo-reactive minerals are woven directly into the ExoWear fabric, where they convert body heat that would otherwise escape into infrared energy and reflect it back toward the body.

Can I layer the ExoWear shorts with other pieces?

ExoWear is designed as a layering system, so these shorts can be paired with the Bare ExoWear Top or ExoWear Vest for more coverage.

What sizes and colors are available?

The Bare ExoWear Men's High-Cut Shorts come in seven sizes: S, M, ML, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL, all in black. The high-cut waist with 2mm ELASTEK full-stretch neoprene bands and the sewn-in molded closure with embossed grip pattern help hold the fit in place. Tried Exowear on a Key Largo trip.

I decided to give BARE exowear a try on a trip to Key Largo. The water temp was about 85 degrees-- wow, that's a swimming pool- and a rash guard was all that was required, but I do tend to get cold after multiple dives, and I wasn't sure about thermoclines, so the extra layer of protection seemed prudent. I also like a little protection from gear webbing and inadvertent scrapes against rocks, coral, boat ladders etc. The shorts and vest combo was perfect. Minimal, if any effect on buoyancy, much more comfortable diving and between dives than a wetsuit. I forgot I had it on, and diving in that warm, clear water was amazing. It's also easy to rinse, hang to dry, and pack. Too soon to tell, but the stuff seems durable. I do wish BARE offered a pocket option for the shorts- not huge tech-type pockets, but something moderately sized- hold a reel /DSMB, or extra flashlight, small slate, etc. That would give them SIX stars!
