DiveVolk Lens & Filter Range
Red Filter (67mm)
The red filter is the essential starting accessory for underwater photography in blue ocean water. As you descend, longer wavelengths (red, orange) are absorbed first. The red filter compensates by adding a warm correction layer over the lens — restoring natural colors at depths of approximately 5 to 25 meters in clear blue water. The result is images that show accurate color rendition of coral, fish, and reef life rather than the blue monochrome that unfiltered underwater photography produces at depth. Particularly effective in the 5–15 meter range that most recreational reef dives occupy. The red filter requires a natural (ambient) light source and works best in good visibility tropical conditions.
Magenta Filter (67mm)
Where the red filter corrects color in blue ocean water, the magenta filter is the equivalent tool for green water — the conditions typical of temperate diving, lakes, rivers, kelp forests, and low-visibility coastal environments. Green water has a different spectral composition that requires a different correction. The magenta filter adds a warm/purple correction that counteracts green water's color cast, restoring more natural tones at depths of 5 to 15 meters. Do I need a filter for underwater photography?
In water shallower than about 5 meters, natural light is often sufficient for good color. Below 5 meters in most conditions, a color correction filter (red or magenta) makes a meaningful difference to how natural your images look. Video lights eliminate the need for filters in their illuminated zone. If you're shooting ambient light reef photography in blue water at 10 meters, the red filter is highly recommended.
What happens if I use the wrong filter?
Using a red filter in green water produces images with a strong pink or magenta cast. Using a magenta filter in blue water produces images with an orange or yellow cast. Neither is correct — the filter has to match the water color at your specific dive site. When in doubt, the Filters Kit with both filters allows you to switch based on conditions.
Can I use the +8 macro lens and a color filter at the same time?
Yes. Filters and lenses can be stacked on the Expansion Clamp system — attach the filter first, then thread the macro lens onto the filter. The macro lens focuses at close range; the filter corrects color. The combination works particularly well for macro photography in blue water at medium depths.
Does the dome lens work with a color filter?
