Atomic Aquatics Regulators — The Standard by Which Others Are Judged
In 1995, Dean Garraffa and Doug Toth founded Atomic Aquatics in Huntington Beach, California with a single stated objective: to build the finest diving equipment humanly possible, regardless of cost. Both founders had been designing diving equipment since 1976 and had generated numerous patents for other manufacturers before deciding to build the gear they couldn't find anywhere else. Their manifesto was simple — no compromises.
The first major proof of that philosophy arrived in January 1997: Atomic Aquatics introduced the world's first titanium regulator. No other manufacturer was using the material in regulators at the time. Titanium is as strong as steel, roughly half the weight, and — uniquely important for saltwater equipment — completely immune to corrosion. It changed the industry. Competitors eventually followed, but Atomic's metallurgy expertise and in-house manufacturing at their Atomica facility in Southern California have kept them ahead of the curve.
Today the Atomic Aquatics regulator lineup spans five series — T3, ST1, M1, B2, and Z3 — each built around a set of patented technologies unavailable on any other brand. Every complete set comes with Atomic's Limited Lifetime Warranty, with a service interval of 2 years or 300 dives — substantially longer than the industry standard of 1 year or 100 dives. At DiveCatalog.com, we carry the full current lineup as an authorized Atomic Aquatics dealer.
Atomic's Patented Technologies — What Makes These Regulators Different
Automatic Flow Control (AFC) — US Patent #5,678,541
Most regulators require a manual venturi adjustment knob that you set at the surface and re-adjust as you descend. Atomic's AFC eliminates this entirely. A computer-designed airfoil inside the second stage mouthpiece is connected to a pressure-sensing diaphragm. As you descend and ambient pressure increases, the airfoil automatically adjusts position to maintain optimal breathing resistance. The result is a regulator that breathes naturally and effortlessly at any depth without manual intervention. You still get a Rapid Adjustment Knob for rare special situations like surf entries.
Seat Saving Dynamic Orifice — Titanium
Most regulators suffer gradual performance degradation because the poppet seat deforms slightly each time the regulator is pressurized. Over time, this affects breathing feel. Atomic's patented Seat Saving Orifice automatically lifts the sealing orifice off the seat whenever the regulator is depressurized — preventing the seat impression that other regulators develop. The result is a regulator that performs identically on dive 1 and dive 1,000. This is one of the primary reasons Atomic can support the 2-year/300-dive service interval.
Comfort Swivel — US Patent #7,188,869
Atomic's Comfort Swivel allows 30° of rotational movement at the second stage hose connection without binding or kinking. On the T3, it's machined from solid titanium with PVD coating. The Comfort Swivel is one of those features that seems minor until your first dive with it — the freedom from hose torque against your face is immediately noticeable. Available on all Atomic regulators.
Balanced Jet Seat High-Flow Piston (T3 / ST1) and Monel Piston (M1)
The T3 and ST1 first stages use Atomic's exclusive balanced Jet Seat piston — a high-flow piston design that delivers consistent airflow regardless of depth or remaining tank pressure. The M1 uses a Monel alloy piston: Monel is a nickel-copper alloy originally developed for marine environments, as strong as steel, with excellent saltwater corrosion resistance and, crucially, compatible with high-percentage oxygen mixes up to 80% when special guidelines are followed.
In-House Manufacturing at Atomica
Atomic's critical components are designed and manufactured at their own Southern California facility, not outsourced. The T3 first stage requires 23 individual CNC machining operations performed in a single continuous session at the Atomica facility — all following California's strict environmental and recycling standards. This level of manufacturing control means every component meets Atomic's specifications rather than a third-party supplier's interpretation of them.
The Atomic Regulator Range
Atomic T3 — The Signature Titanium Regulator
The T3 is Atomic's flagship and the benchmark against which they measure everything else. First and second stage components are precision-machined from solid titanium alloy billet — not cast or stamped, but CNC-machined for dimensional precision. The combined weight of the T3 first and second stage is under 1.8 pounds in the Yoke version, making it the lightest full-size high-performance regulator available. The T3 first stage is sealed and freeze-protected, features 2 HP ports and 5 LP ports on a swivel cap, and is nitrox compatible to 40% from the factory. The all-titanium Comfort Swivel with black PVD coating is standard. Available in Yoke Sealed and DIN Sealed configurations.
The T3 carries Atomic's Limited Lifetime Warranty and requires service only every 2 years or 300 dives — the longest service interval of any premium regulator on the market. For travel divers who dive frequently in remote locations, this matters enormously.
Atomic ST1 — Solid Titanium, Refined Performance
The ST1 uses the same titanium first stage construction and the same suite of patented Atomic technologies as the T3, but with a different second stage profile suited to divers who want the full Atomic T-Series performance at a lower price point. Machined from solid titanium, factory-sealed, Comfort Swivel standard. Available in Yoke Sealed and DIN Sealed. Same Lifetime Warranty and 2-year/300-dive service interval as the T3.
Atomic M1 — Monel First Stage for Nitrox and Technical Use
The M1 uses a first stage constructed from Monel alloy — a material developed specifically for marine environments, as strong as steel with excellent corrosion resistance in seawater. Monel does not require plating, eliminating the failure mode of chrome peeling or oxidizing. Its compatibility with high-percentage oxygen makes the M1 particularly suited to technical and nitrox-heavy divers. The second stage is the same balanced pneumatically-controlled design as the T3. Available in Yoke Sealed and DIN Sealed, as a complete set and as individual components.
Atomic B2 — Chrome-Plated Brass, T3 Second Stage
The B2 uses the proven T3 second stage paired with a chrome-plated brass first stage, bringing the breathing performance of the T3's second stage to a more accessible price point. The first stage is balanced and factory-sealed. Available in Yoke, DIN, Yoke Sealed, and DIN Sealed configurations — the Sealed versions add environmental sealing to exclude silt and contaminants. Individual B2 first stages are also available separately.
Atomic Z3 — Compact, Colorful, and Capable
The Z3 is the most compact regulator in the Atomic lineup and the most accessible entry point into the brand. It shares the AFC automatic flow control and balanced design philosophy of the higher series in a smaller, lighter package. The Z3 is popular with travel divers, smaller divers, and those building a first kit. It's also the model most often personalized with Atomic's Color Kits — available in gray, blue, yellow, red, and black to coordinate with fins, BCDs, and other gear. Available in Yoke, DIN, Yoke Sealed, and DIN Sealed.
Safe Second / Octopus Options
Atomic offers matched octopus second stages for all series: the Ti2 (titanium), M1, B2, and Z2 octopuses, all in high-visibility yellow on a 36" hose as standard. The SS1 Safe Second is Atomic's unique integrated BCD inflator/octopus combination — a single device that serves as both the BCD power inflator and an emergency air source. Available in multiple colors to coordinate with your kit.

Sealed vs. Unsealed — What Does it Mean?
Atomic offers most regulators in both standard and "Sealed" versions. An unsealed first stage vents its spring chamber to the water — fine for warm, clear water. A sealed (environmentally sealed) first stage isolates the internal mechanism entirely from the surrounding water using a dry chamber system. This prevents silt, sand, and corrosive saltwater from entering the first stage mechanism, improves freeze resistance by keeping moisture out, and maintains lubrication over longer service periods. The Sealed versions are recommended for cold water, silty conditions, and high-frequency divers. The T3 and ST1 are only available in Sealed configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions — Atomic Aquatics Regulators
What makes Atomic regulators different from other brands?
Several things, but the most significant are: (1) titanium construction — the only brand to machine regulators from solid titanium billet; (2) AFC Automatic Flow Control, which eliminates the manual venturi adjustment; (3) the Seat Saving Dynamic Orifice, which preserves factory performance over thousands of dives; and (4) the Comfort Swivel on every second stage hose. Together these represent multiple US patents that no other manufacturer can replicate.
Do Atomic regulators really only need service every 2 years / 300 dives?
Yes — and the Lifetime Warranty is not contingent on annual service. The extended interval is a direct result of the Seat Saving Orifice (which prevents seat wear), the sealed first stage design (which prevents contamination), and the materials used throughout. For comparison, most brands require annual servicing to maintain warranty coverage.
What is the difference between the T3 and ST1?
Both use solid titanium construction, the same sealed first stage, AFC, Seat Saving Orifice, and Comfort Swivel. The T3 uses the Jet Seat high-flow first stage piston and the most refined version of the T-Series second stage. The ST1 shares the core titanium construction and patented features at a lower price point. Both carry the Lifetime Warranty and 2-year/300-dive service interval.
What does "Monel" mean in the M1 regulator?
Monel is a nickel-copper alloy developed specifically for marine environments. It's as strong as steel, requires no plating (eliminating plating failure as a degradation mode), and has excellent resistance to saltwater corrosion. The M1 uses Monel for its first stage components and is specifically rated for high-percentage oxygen use, making it the choice for technical divers working with enriched gas mixes.
What is the Atomic AFC and why does it matter?
AFC (Automatic Flow Control) is a patented depth-sensing airfoil inside the second stage that automatically adjusts Venturi effect as you descend, maintaining optimal breathing resistance without manual adjustment. Most regulators require you to set a venturi switch before the dive and re-adjust it if conditions change. Atomic's AFC does this automatically — the regulator breathes naturally at 10 feet and at 130 feet without you touching anything.
Are Atomic regulators nitrox compatible?
All Atomic regulators are nitrox compatible to 40% O2 from the factory. The M1 (with Monel construction) is compatible with higher oxygen mixes when special guidelines are followed.
What are Color Kits?
Atomic Color Kits replace the external cover components of the second stage with colored versions — available in gray, blue, yellow, red, black, and others depending on model. They let you coordinate your regulator color with your fins, BCD, and mask. Color Kits are available for the B2, Z2, Z3, and SS1.
What is the SS1 Safe Second?
The SS1 combines a full second-stage regulator with a BCD inflator in one unit. It replaces the standard power inflator on the BCD and doubles as an emergency air source, eliminating the need for a separate traditional octopus on a long hose. It's available in multiple colors and connects via quick-disconnect to most standard BCD inflator hoses.
When Atomic Aquatics says "Before Atomic, there was no best," it's not just a slogan — it's the standard they've held themselves to since 1995. Browse the full regulator lineup above, and reach out if you'd like help choosing the right model and configuration for your diving.
