Product Information

The Apeks XTX50 Dive Regulator is a complete first and second stage regulator set built on the over-balanced, environmentally sealed DST diaphragm first stage, rated for cold water use below 10°C/50°F and compatible with EAN40 nitrox straight out of the box. It is offered in both DIN and yoke connections.

Who it is for

This set suits divers who want one regulator for cold water as well as warm, and who care about how the hoses sit. The environmental dry system keeps water out of the main spring chamber, preventing ice buildup and keeping silt and contamination out. A patented heat exchanger surrounding the valve mechanism dissipates the cold caused by gas expansion while drawing in the warmth of the ambient water. Underwater photographers can fit the small exhaust tee for minimal bubble interference, and divers building sidemount or twin cylinder rigs can use the optional 5th port.

Key details

  • DST first stage: over-balanced diaphragm, environmentally sealed, chrome over marine brass.
  • 2 HP ports (7/16" UNF) and 4 MP ports (3/8" UNF) on a rotating turret, angled for hose routing without sharp bends.
  • Pneumatically balanced second stage with an opening effort control knob, a large soft touch venturi lever and a 2-stage progressive purge.
  • Overall work of breathing averages 0.70 joules/liter.
  • Weight: 1269 g in yoke, 1139 g in DIN, on braided flexi-hoses.

Compatibility and sizing

Choose DIN or yoke at checkout. The XTX50 can be converted from a right-handed to a left-handed hose configuration by an Apeks Authorized Service Technician. Nitrox compatible to 40% O2 when new and out of the box, and it can be cleaned to 100%. Both sets of Diver Changeable exhaust tees, small and large, are supplied with the regulator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Apeks XTX50 good for cold water?

Yes — it is one of the classic cold-water regulators. The DST first stage is an over-balanced diaphragm design that is environmentally dry-sealed, keeping water out of the main spring chamber to prevent ice buildup, and the second stage carries a patented heat exchanger around the valve mechanism. Apeks rates the XTX50 for cold-water use, and it delivers gas on a rotating turret with 2 HP and 4 MP ports for clean hose routing.

What can I adjust on the XTX50, and what service does it need?

The second stage is pneumatically balanced with two diver controls: an opening-effort (cracking resistance) knob and an integrated venturi lever that prevents free-flow at the surface. A signature XTX feature: the second stage is reversible for left- or right-hand hose routing (a dealer conversion). Apeks requires service at least once a year by a factory-trained technician, which also maintains the limited lifetime warranty and Free Parts for Life eligibility when purchased from an authorized dealer like us.

How often does a scuba regulator need servicing?

Follow the interval in your regulator's manual, since manufacturers commonly specify an annual inspection or a set number of dives and many warranties depend on it. A regulator is life-support equipment, so service belongs with a factory-trained technician rather than being attempted at home. Have it looked at sooner than scheduled if you notice increased breathing effort, free-flow, bubbles, or water in the second stage.

How do I rinse and care for a regulator after diving?

Make sure the dust cap is dry and firmly seated over the first-stage inlet before the regulator goes anywhere near water, because water inside the first stage is the leading cause of internal corrosion. Rinse in fresh water without pressing the purge button, since purging while depressurized can draw water back into the second stage. Shake out the water and hang it to dry with the hoses in wide, gentle loops rather than tight bends.

Can I fly with a scuba regulator?

Regulators travel well and are usually best carried in hand luggage where they will not be crushed or lost. A regulator holds no gas of its own, so there is nothing inherently problematic about it on an aircraft, though the airline and security screeners always have the final say. Pack it dry with the dust cap in place, in a padded regulator bag or wrapped in soft gear.

Can I use my regulator with nitrox?

Many modern regulators are supplied as suitable for nitrox mixes up to 40 percent oxygen, which is the widely used recreational industry standard, while anything above that requires dedicated oxygen-clean equipment and procedures. Confirm what your specific regulator's manual states, and follow your nitrox training and your fill station's requirements. Never assume a regulator is oxygen-service clean simply because it looks clean or is new.

What is the difference between DIN and yoke regulators?

A yoke (A-clamp) fitting clamps over the tank valve and is the most common connection across much of the recreational world, while a DIN fitting screws into the valve and is standard in much of Europe and in technical diving. DIN captures the o-ring inside the threads, which many divers consider more secure, but yoke is often what rental cylinders provide. Adapters exist in both directions, so check what is used where you dive before deciding.

What is the octopus regulator for?

The octopus is your backup second stage, carried so you can share air with a buddy who is out of gas, or breathe from it yourself if your primary fails or free-flows. It is normally on a longer, brightly colored hose so it is easy to find and hand over under stress. Secure it in the triangle between your chin and the bottom of your rib cage so it is instantly accessible and not dragging through sand or coral.

How should I store a regulator between dive trips?

Store it fully dry, out of sunlight, with the dust cap in place and the hoses in wide loops rather than tightly coiled. Avoid hanging it by the second stages for long periods, which stresses the hose fittings; laying it flat in a padded bag or hanging it by the first stage is kinder. If it has sat unused for a long stretch, have it checked before your next trip rather than assuming it is ready to dive.

Apeks XTX50 vs Aqua Lung LEG3ND: which regulator should I choose?

Both are over-balanced diaphragm first stages built for cold water, and both come with a limited lifetime warranty plus Free Parts for Life when bought from an authorized dealer and serviced annually. The XTX50 is environmentally dry-sealed with a heat exchanger around the second-stage valve, a rotating turret with 2 HP and 4 MP ports, separate cracking-effort and venturi controls, and a second stage that a dealer can reverse for left- or right-hand hose routing. The LEG3ND uses a dry chamber with deep external heat-exchange ribs, adds Aqua Lung's ACD auto closure device, and merges venturi and inhalation adjustment into the single MBS knob. Choose the XTX50 for hose-routing flexibility, the LEG3ND for one-knob simplicity and ACD.

Should I order the Apeks XTX50 in DIN or yoke?

Yoke (INT) is the common fitting on rental tanks in North America and the Caribbean, so it is the easy choice if you mostly dive resorts. DIN screws directly into the valve, is rated for higher pressures and is the standard in Europe and technical diving — and a DIN regulator can use a simple adapter on yoke tanks, which makes it the more flexible option for travelers. Apeks sells the XTX50 in both, so pick based on the tanks you will actually breathe from.

Can the Apeks XTX50 second stage be set up for left-hand hose routing?

Yes — reversibility is a signature XTX feature: the second stage can be converted for left- or right-hand hose routing, done by a dealer rather than at home. That is what makes it easy to build matched sidemount or stage/deco setups where one regulator has to come over the opposite shoulder. Ask us before you order and we will have it configured the way you dive.

What do the two exhaust tees on the Apeks XTX50 do?

The XTX50 uses a Diver Changeable Exhaust, and both sets of tees come with the regulator. The small exhaust tee gives minimal bubble interference, which is what underwater photographers want so bubbles stay out of the frame. The large exhaust tee gives a compact and comfortable regulator for general diving.

Can the Apeks XTX50 be used for sidemount or twin cylinders?

Yes. An optional 5th port is available for side mount or twin cylinder setups, and the four MP ports sit on a rotating turret angled for optimum hose routing, which eliminates sharp bends. The XTX50 can also be converted from a right-handed to a left-handed hose configuration, a quick job for an Apeks Authorized Service Technician.

How much does the Apeks XTX50 weigh?

Weight is listed as 1269 g for the yoke version and 1139 g for the DIN version. The braided flexi-hoses are lighter weight, more flexible and more durable.

How easy does the Apeks XTX50 breathe?

Overall work of breathing scores average 0.70 joules/liter. The second stage is pneumatically balanced for smooth, easy breathing, and the over-balanced first stage raises medium pressure in the hose faster than ambient as you descend, so performance holds up at depth. Two controls let you tune delivery underwater: an opening effort knob and a large venturi lever with a soft touch rubber grip.
