Product Information

The Apeks MTX-RC Dive Regulator is a complete first and second stage set designed for extreme cold water diving, built around an environmentally sealed, over-balanced diaphragm first stage and a pneumatically balanced second stage with a patented heat exchanger. It is tested for octopus use to EN250A to 60 metres in cold water, is offered in DIN or Yoke connections, and is designed and manufactured in the UK.

Who it is for

This set suits divers in extreme cold water as well as divers who want the same performance in warmer conditions. The reversible second stage accepts either a left or right hand gas supply, and four of the five medium pressure ports sit on a rotating turret.

Key details

  • Satin plated brass first stage body with heat exchanging ribs and a ribbed diaphragm clamp for heat transfer in cold water.
  • Over-moulded endcap and environmental diaphragm help prevent ice build-up and protect against impact damage.
  • 2 high pressure ports (7/16" UNF), angled for hose routing and transmitters, plus 5 medium pressure ports (3/8" UNF), 4 of them on a rotating turret.
  • Pneumatically balanced second stage with opening effort control knob, venturi lever, large purge button and Comfo-bite mouthpiece.
  • Diver Changeable Exhaust (DCE) system lets you swap between a small and a large exhaust tee.
  • Double swivel braided flexi-hose for better cold water performance than traditional rubber hose.

Compatibility and sizing

Available here as DIN (SKU RG122130) and Yoke (SKU RG122129). Apeks lists DIN at 300 bar, Yoke at 232 bar and an M26 300 bar oxygen version. The regulator is nitrox compatible to 40% O2 out of the box; within the EU anything above 21% O2 must use an M26 connection.

What's in the box

  • MTX-RC first stage in your chosen connection
  • MTX-RC second stage with braided flexi-hose
  • Exhaust tees for the Diver Changeable Exhaust system, as supplied by Apeks
  • Tactical style messenger bag

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a scuba regulator need servicing?

Follow the interval in your regulator's manual, since manufacturers commonly specify an annual inspection or a set number of dives and many warranties depend on it. A regulator is life-support equipment, so service belongs with a factory-trained technician rather than being attempted at home. Have it looked at sooner than scheduled if you notice increased breathing effort, free-flow, bubbles, or water in the second stage.

How do I rinse and care for a regulator after diving?

Make sure the dust cap is dry and firmly seated over the first-stage inlet before the regulator goes anywhere near water, because water inside the first stage is the leading cause of internal corrosion. Rinse in fresh water without pressing the purge button, since purging while depressurized can draw water back into the second stage. Shake out the water and hang it to dry with the hoses in wide, gentle loops rather than tight bends.

Can I fly with a scuba regulator?

Regulators travel well and are usually best carried in hand luggage where they will not be crushed or lost. A regulator holds no gas of its own, so there is nothing inherently problematic about it on an aircraft, though the airline and security screeners always have the final say. Pack it dry with the dust cap in place, in a padded regulator bag or wrapped in soft gear.

Can I use my regulator with nitrox?

Many modern regulators are supplied as suitable for nitrox mixes up to 40 percent oxygen, which is the widely used recreational industry standard, while anything above that requires dedicated oxygen-clean equipment and procedures. Confirm what your specific regulator's manual states, and follow your nitrox training and your fill station's requirements. Never assume a regulator is oxygen-service clean simply because it looks clean or is new.

What is the difference between DIN and yoke regulators?

A yoke (A-clamp) fitting clamps over the tank valve and is the most common connection across much of the recreational world, while a DIN fitting screws into the valve and is standard in much of Europe and in technical diving. DIN captures the o-ring inside the threads, which many divers consider more secure, but yoke is often what rental cylinders provide. Adapters exist in both directions, so check what is used where you dive before deciding.

What is the octopus regulator for?

The octopus is your backup second stage, carried so you can share air with a buddy who is out of gas, or breathe from it yourself if your primary fails or free-flows. It is normally on a longer, brightly colored hose so it is easy to find and hand over under stress. Secure it in the triangle between your chin and the bottom of your rib cage so it is instantly accessible and not dragging through sand or coral.

How should I store a regulator between dive trips?

Store it fully dry, out of sunlight, with the dust cap in place and the hoses in wide loops rather than tightly coiled. Avoid hanging it by the second stages for long periods, which stresses the hose fittings; laying it flat in a padded bag or hanging it by the first stage is kinder. If it has sat unused for a long stretch, have it checked before your next trip rather than assuming it is ready to dive.

Is the Apeks MTX-RC suitable for ice and extreme cold water diving?

Yes. The MTX-RC is rated for extreme cold water use. The first stage is environmentally sealed with heat exchanging ribs, a ribbed diaphragm clamp and an over-moulded endcap and environmental diaphragm that help prevent ice build-up leading to free flow. The second stage adds a patented heat exchanger that dissipates the cold of gas expansion, and the braided flexi-hose performs better in cold water than rubber.

How many hose ports does the MTX-RC first stage have?

The MTX-RC first stage has five medium pressure ports in 3/8" UNF, four of them mounted on a rotating turret for better hose orientation, plus two angled high pressure ports in 7/16" UNF suited to hose routing and fitting air transmitters.

What is the Diver Changeable Exhaust (DCE) system on the MTX-RC?

DCE lets the diver change the second stage exhaust tee, swapping between a small tee and a large tee.

Can the MTX-RC second stage be used as an octopus or on a left hand gas supply?

Yes. The MTX-RC second stage is reversible for either a left or right hand gas supply. It is also tested for octopus use to EN250A to 60 metres in cold water, so the same second stage can serve as a primary or a backup depending on how you rig it.

Review summary

5.0 58 ratings across the web

Reviewers agree this regulator performs, with many calling it the best they have owned. Cold water divers single it out as one of the top options for low temperatures, and one notes hose routing that sits clean on the body. Owners also describe it as comfortable in the mouth, with small adjustments possible in how it sits. It is heavier than most regulators, which is good to know before packing. A solid pick for cold water and serious divers who want proven gear.
