Product Information

The SeaLife SportDiver S Underwater Smartphone Housing (SL408) is a compact, lightweight phone housing rated to 100 ft / 30 m that turns a recent iPhone or Android phone into an underwater camera, controlled wirelessly over Bluetooth Low Energy with the free SportDiver app. It weighs 22.6 oz / 641 g (housing only), stays positively buoyant by 2.8 oz / 80 g with batteries, filter and Moisture Muncher installed, and runs 50+ hours on two AAA batteries.

Who it is for

This is the housing for the snorkeler, freediver or recreational scuba diver who already owns a good phone camera and wants underwater photos and 4K video without buying a dedicated camera system. The large shutter lever and rear control buttons work with dive gloves, and three 1/4-20 tripod threads let you grow into trays, Sea Dragon lights and SportDiver wide-angle or macro lenses later.

Key details

  • Depth rated to 100 ft / 30 m, each housing individually depth tested.
  • Dual Leak Alarms: vacuum pressure sensor plus internal moisture sensor with visual, audio and LED alerts.
  • Pre-dive 3.5 minute vacuum pressure leak analysis using the included vacuum pump.
  • Polycarbonate body with 304-316 stainless steel and hard-anodized T6061 aluminum hardware, optical glass lens port with anti-reflective inner coating.
  • External 8.4 x 4.9 x 2.2 in (213.1 x 125.7 x 54.8 mm); internal 6.49 x 3.15 x 0.38 in (165 x 80 x 9.7 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check an underwater housing's seal before a dive?

Before every dive, open the housing somewhere clean and dry, inspect and wipe the main o-ring and its groove, and close it with nothing trapped in the seal, because a single hair or grain of sand is enough to flood it. Confirm every latch is fully closed and that any vacuum or leak alarm reads correctly. Where you can, soak the sealed housing in a rinse tank or hang at the surface before descending, so a leak shows up before depth.

How do I care for housing o-rings?

Remove the main o-ring regularly with a plastic tool rather than anything metal, which can nick the groove, and clean both the o-ring and the groove with a lint-free cloth. Apply a thin film of the silicone grease the manufacturer specifies, since grease helps the o-ring seat and slide rather than sealing by itself, and a thick coat only collects grit. Replace o-rings on the schedule in the manual, or sooner if they look flattened, cut, or dry.

What do moisture alarms and desiccant packs do?

A moisture alarm is a sensor inside the housing that beeps or flashes when it detects water, giving you a chance to abort the dive before the camera is ruined. Desiccant packs absorb humidity in the air sealed inside the housing, which prevents the port fogging as you descend into cooler water. Neither replaces a proper seal check, since they provide early warning and fog control rather than leak prevention.

How deep can I take an underwater camera housing?

Only as deep as its rated depth, which the manufacturer sets and publishes in the specifications, and it should never be exceeded even briefly. Depth ratings assume a housing in good condition with intact seals, so worn o-rings or a damaged port reduce the real margin. If your diving might take you deeper, choose a housing rated comfortably beyond your planned maximum depth.

Can I use a phone housing for scuba diving?

Only if the housing is specifically rated for the depth you plan to dive, because many phone cases are splash- or snorkel-rated rather than scuba-rated. Touchscreens generally do not respond underwater, so a diving phone housing needs mechanical buttons or another control method. A phone's own water-resistance rating is not a substitute for a housing, and any housing still needs seal checks and o-ring care.

How do I rinse a camera housing after diving?

Soak the closed, sealed housing in fresh water and work every button and dial while it is submerged so salt does not dry inside the control shafts. Let it dry completely, especially around latches and seams, before you open it, since opening a wet housing drips water straight onto the camera. Avoid opening a housing on a wet, moving boat deck whenever you have the option to wait.

What should I do if my housing floods?

Get the housing out of the water and open it somewhere dry, then immediately remove the camera's battery and memory card, because leaving a battery in a wet camera does more damage than the water itself. Do not power the camera on to check whether it still works. Dry everything gently away from direct heat, get salt-water-exposed equipment to a repair technician promptly, and inspect the housing to find which seal failed before you dive it again.

Which phones fit the SeaLife SportDiver S?

SeaLife lists the SportDiver S (SL408) as compatible with iPhone 11 and newer through iPhone 16 Pro Max, excluding iPhone 17 and 18 Pro Max, plus many Android phones including the Samsung Galaxy S24+. The internal cavity measures 6.49 x 3.15 x 0.38 in (165 x 80 x 9.7 mm), and 36 rubber grip tabs in small, medium and large adjust the fit. Check SeaLife's compatibility chart or call us with your model.

How does the vacuum leak test on the SportDiver S work?

You seal your phone inside, attach the included vacuum pump to the check port and pump to remove air, then the housing runs a 3.5 minute vacuum pressure leak analysis. The leak alarm LED flashes green when vacuum is not applied, shows solid green when pressure is okay and flashes red if a leak is detected. A second internal moisture sensor stays active during the dive. The vacuum test is rated for use up to 6500 ft / 1980 m altitude.

What batteries does the SportDiver S use and how long do they last?

The SportDiver S runs on two AAA batteries, alkaline or NiMH, and SeaLife rates them for 50+ hours of continuous use. Two AAA alkaline batteries are included in the box. The SportDiver S runs on two AAA batteries, alkaline or NiMH, rated for 50+ hours of continuous use; two AAA alkaline batteries are included.

Can I add lights, filters or lenses to the SportDiver S?

Yes. The SportDiver S has three standard 1/4-20 tripod threads for Sea Dragon underwater photo-video lights, trays and other standard-thread accessories. The optical glass lens port is compatible with previous SportDiver filters and lenses, including wide-angle and macro optics and optional color-correction filters. The base SL408 housing does not include a color filter, so filters and lights are purchased separately.

Review summary

4.2 18 ratings across the web

Written reviews for this one are still few. The SportDiver S is a compact underwater smartphone housing rated to 100 feet (30 meters), compatible with iPhone X and newer, including Pro Max, plus most Android phones. It is built from polycarbonate, stainless steel, aluminum and optical-grade glass, weighs 1.41 pounds (641 grams), and sits near neutrally buoyant in water. A cam-lock latch with a TPE O-ring seals the door, and a Moisture Muncher capsule limits fogging. It suits divers of any experience level starting underwater photography.
