Product Information

The SeaLife SportDiver Ultra Smartphone Housing (SL405) is an underwater phone housing rated to 130 feet (40 meters) that turns an iPhone or large Android phone into an underwater camera, with glove-friendly mechanical controls, Bluetooth Low Energy 5 operation through the free SportDiver app and a dual leak alarm that combines a pre-dive vacuum pressure check with an internal wet sensor.

Who it is for

It suits scuba divers, snorkelers and freedivers who already carry a capable phone camera and want photo and video to recreational depths without buying a dedicated camera. The large shutter lever and rear buttons work with dive gloves on, and seven 1/4-20 threads let it grow into a lit rig with Sea Dragon photo-video lights and trays as your shooting gets more ambitious.

Key details

  • Depth rated and individually depth-tested to 130 feet (40 meters).
  • Polycarbonate housing with 304-316 stainless steel and hard-anodized T6061 aluminum hardware, an optical glass lens port with anti-reflective coating and an optical grade polycarbonate LCD window.
  • Two AAA batteries (alkaline or NiMH) deliver over 50 hours of continuous use.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy 5 pairing, so no cable or contact touches the phone; connection takes up to 1 minute.
  • Pre-dive vacuum test runs 3.5 minutes; a 5-contact internal wet sensor backs it up.
  • Weighs 28.5 oz (808 g) without a phone and is positively buoyant by 5.3 oz (150.4 g).

Fits iPhone 11 through iPhone 18 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S-series Ultra models, the Google Pixel range and most other large Android phones. Internal space measures 7.20" x 3.15" x 0.49" (18.3 cm x 8.0 cm x 1.2 cm). Accessories include the SL911 Moisture Muncher capsule, the SL4056 Screen Shield and the SL40510 spare O-ring kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which phones work with the SeaLife SportDiver Ultra housing, and how do you control it?

It fits iPhone models from the iPhone 10 through iPhone 17 Pro Max and most Android phones including larger Samsung Galaxy S Ultra and Google Pixel models, using SeaLife's free SportDiver app. Unlike touchscreen housings, it uses physical, glove-friendly controls — a large shutter lever plus rear buttons for mode, zoom, focus, and settings — so it works reliably even in cold water with gloves. The app adds control over exposure, white balance, manual focus, and RAW capture.

How does the SportDiver Ultra prevent leaks, and how deep can it go?

The housing is depth-rated and individually tested to 130 feet (40 meters), and it has Dual Leak Alarms — an internal moisture alarm and a vacuum-pressure alarm. Before every dive you pump out the air with the included vacuum pump and confirm the seal holds, so you know the housing is sealed before your phone ever goes underwater. It is one of the most reassuring safety systems in a phone housing.

How do I check an underwater housing's seal before a dive?

Before every dive, open the housing somewhere clean and dry, inspect and wipe the main o-ring and its groove, and close it with nothing trapped in the seal, because a single hair or grain of sand is enough to flood it. Confirm every latch is fully closed and that any vacuum or leak alarm reads correctly. Where you can, soak the sealed housing in a rinse tank or hang at the surface before descending, so a leak shows up before depth.

How do I care for housing o-rings?

Remove the main o-ring regularly with a plastic tool rather than anything metal, which can nick the groove, and clean both the o-ring and the groove with a lint-free cloth. Apply a thin film of the silicone grease the manufacturer specifies, since grease helps the o-ring seat and slide rather than sealing by itself, and a thick coat only collects grit. Replace o-rings on the schedule in the manual, or sooner if they look flattened, cut, or dry.

What do moisture alarms and desiccant packs do?

A moisture alarm is a sensor inside the housing that beeps or flashes when it detects water, giving you a chance to abort the dive before the camera is ruined. Desiccant packs absorb humidity in the air sealed inside the housing, which prevents the port fogging as you descend into cooler water. Neither replaces a proper seal check, since they provide early warning and fog control rather than leak prevention.

How deep can I take an underwater camera housing?

Only as deep as its rated depth, which the manufacturer sets and publishes in the specifications, and it should never be exceeded even briefly. Depth ratings assume a housing in good condition with intact seals, so worn o-rings or a damaged port reduce the real margin. If your diving might take you deeper, choose a housing rated comfortably beyond your planned maximum depth.

Can I use a phone housing for scuba diving?

Only if the housing is specifically rated for the depth you plan to dive, because many phone cases are splash- or snorkel-rated rather than scuba-rated. Touchscreens generally do not respond underwater, so a diving phone housing needs mechanical buttons or another control method. A phone's own water-resistance rating is not a substitute for a housing, and any housing still needs seal checks and o-ring care.

How do I rinse a camera housing after diving?

Soak the closed, sealed housing in fresh water and work every button and dial while it is submerged so salt does not dry inside the control shafts. Let it dry completely, especially around latches and seams, before you open it, since opening a wet housing drips water straight onto the camera. Avoid opening a housing on a wet, moving boat deck whenever you have the option to wait.

What should I do if my housing floods?

Get the housing out of the water and open it somewhere dry, then immediately remove the camera's battery and memory card, because leaving a battery in a wet camera does more damage than the water itself. Do not power the camera on to check whether it still works. Dry everything gently away from direct heat, get salt-water-exposed equipment to a repair technician promptly, and inspect the housing to find which seal failed before you dive it again.

What comes with the SportDiver Ultra housing?

The box includes the SportDiver Ultra housing, a red color-correction filter, the vacuum pump, rubber grip tabs in various sizes, a spare O-ring kit, O-ring lubricant and a removal tool, a deluxe padded lanyard with swivel clip, a Moisture Muncher capsule sample, three anti-glare foam strips, two AAA alkaline batteries and an EVA carry case.

How long does the pre-dive vacuum test take, and does altitude affect it?

The pre-dive vacuum pressure test runs for 3.5 minutes, during which the LED confirms the housing is holding vacuum: solid green means the seal is good, while flashing green means no vacuum has been drawn. The vacuum check system is specified for use up to 6,500 feet (1,980 m) of altitude, equal to 11.6 psia.

Can I add lights to the SportDiver Ultra?

Yes. The housing has seven standard 1/4-20 tripod threads, which accept SeaLife Sea Dragon underwater photo-video lights, trays and other 1/4-20 mount accessories. That lets you start with the housing alone and build out to a one or two light setup later. SeaLife also publishes bundled sets such as the SportDiver Ultra Pro 5000 Set.

What size phone fits inside, and how long do the batteries last?

The internal cavity measures 7.20" x 3.15" x 0.49" (18.3 cm x 8.0 cm x 1.2 cm), which covers iPhone 11 through iPhone 18 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S-series Ultra models, Google Pixel and most large Android phones. Power comes from two AAA alkaline or NiMH batteries rated for over 50 hours of continuous use, so one set lasts many dive days.

Review summary

4.5 51 ratings across the web

Reviewers agree the SportDiver ULTRA takes much better photos and video than they expected, with several calling results sharper than a GoPro, and most found setup simple after a dive or two. The housing feels sturdy, buoyancy is neutral in the water, and it holds large phones like an iPhone Pro Max. Good to know: the app takes practice to switch modes quickly, and one diver added padding to keep a phone snug. Best for divers who want real camera control and are willing to learn the system.

A great way to take pictures and videos underwater

What I love: my phone (iPhone 16 Pro Max) fits great and doesn't move in the case. Putting the phone in is easy. The app has some room for improvement, but otherwise works as intended. The fact that the phone can detect the seal. While I don't necessarily like waiting the 3 minutes. It does feel safer having it tell you that there is no leak. The case feels sturdy and hefty. Like I COULD drop it and it would be OK. Buoyancy of the case feels spot on. It doesn't seem like it drags at all. The filter cover string sometimes gets in the way of pictures. The strap that comes with feels... a little flimsy but I'll probably end up making my own for it before long.

It also came with a nice carrying case and a tool to suction the case with. Great quality with those overall. Nothing feels like it was "thrown in" last minute.

Overall, a great case that makes me feel like my phone is protected well. Camera is easy to use. Setup was great.
