Product Information

The Oceanic Photon BCD is a modular back-inflation buoyancy compensator offered in two configurations on one shared platform: the Photon Pro, with 34 to 42 lb (15 to 19 kg) of lift and 304 stainless steel hardware, and the Photon Air, a low-profile travel build with 25 to 34 lb (11 to 15 kg) of lift and techno polymer hardware. Both come in men's and women's specific fits and share the same adjustable modular harness, so accessories, color kits and weight systems interchange between them.

Who it is for

Choose the Photon Pro if you dive locally, wear thicker exposure protection or run steel cylinders and want the higher lift, welded seam wing and stainless TankTamer band. Choose the Photon Air if you fly to your diving or dive mostly from day boats: it weighs 6.4 lb (3 kg) in men's XL/XXL versus 8.4 lb (3.8 kg) for the Pro, and uses a quick-dry 3D mesh harness. Both are back-inflate designs, so the air cell sits behind you for a clean chest and a stable horizontal trim.

Key details

  • Photon Pro lift: men's XS/SM 34 lb (15 kg), men's MD/LG and XL/XXL 42 lb (19 kg), women's XS/SM and MD/LG 34 lb (15 kg).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Oceanic Photon Pro and Photon Air?

They are two configurations of Oceanic's modular Photon back-inflation BCD on one shared frame. The Photon Pro is the full-featured version: more lift (34–42 lbs by size), 304 stainless steel hardware, an included stainless TankTamer tank band, A.P.S. adjustable positioning, and 2 x 10 lb ditchable weight pockets. The Photon Air is the lightweight travel version: 25–34 lbs lift, techno-polymer hardware, a quick-dry travel harness, 2 x 5 lb ditchable pockets, and about 2 lbs lighter. Choose Pro for durability and cold-water capacity, Air for packing light.

How much lift and ballast does the Oceanic Photon Pro have?

The Photon Pro provides 34 lbs of lift in XS/SM and 42 lbs in MD/LG and XL/XXL. Its QLR4 quick-release weight system carries up to 2 x 10 lbs (4.5 kg) of ditchable weight in the front pockets plus 2 x 5 lbs (2.3 kg) in rear trim pockets, so for most recreational diving it fully replaces a weight belt. Dry weight is about 8.4 lbs, and it is built from UV-resistant 420-denier nylon with 304 stainless hardware.

What does the Oceanic Photon Color Kit change?

It is a purely cosmetic accent kit — shoulder epaulettes, hose retainers, webbing retainers, zipper pulls, and a matching wing bungee — that lets you personalize the look of your Photon Pro or Photon Air in one of five colors (Aqua, Black, Blue, Pink, White). It changes appearance only, with no effect on lift, weight capacity, or function. The Photon platform is fully modular, so accessories cross over between the Pro and Air.

Is the Oceanic Photon a back-inflate BCD?

Yes — the Photon uses a back-inflation wing, so the air cell sits behind you. That keeps you streamlined and supports a comfortable, stable horizontal position in the water, which is why back-inflate designs are favored by traveling and experienced divers. Up front the harness stays uncluttered, with just the shoulder straps and integrated weight pockets.

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

Oceanic Photon Pro vs Oceanic Excursion: which back-inflate BCD?

The Photon Pro is the modular one: 34 lbs of lift in XS/SM and 42 lbs in the larger sizes, 420-denier nylon with 304 stainless hardware, an included stainless TankTamer band, A.P.S. adjustable positioning, QLR4 weights (2 x 10 lbs ditchable plus 2 x 5 lbs trim) and about 8.4 lbs dry — plus a shared accessory and color-kit ecosystem with the lighter Photon Air. The Excursion carries more lift at the top end (17 to 23 liters, roughly 38 to 51 lbs) with the stretchy BioFlex bladder, a padded lumbar backpack and a depth-compensating cummerbund, and Oceanic backs it with a five-year warranty when it is serviced annually. Choose the Excursion for maximum lift and cold-water rigs, the Photon for modularity and a travel-friendly sibling.

Is the Oceanic Photon a good travel BCD?

The Photon Air is the configuration built for it: 25 to 34 lbs of lift, techno-polymer hardware instead of stainless, a quick-dry travel harness, 2 x 5 lb ditchable pockets, and about 2 lbs lighter than the Photon Pro, which itself weighs about 8.4 lbs dry. If you fly to most of your diving and dive warm water, the Air is the pick; if you want stainless hardware and more ballast capacity for cold-water rigs, take the Pro.

What size Oceanic Photon should I get?

The Photon is sized in three combined ranges — XS/SM, MD/LG and XL/XXL — and lift goes up with size (34 lbs in XS/SM, 42 lbs in MD/LG and XL/XXL on the Photon Pro). We do not have Oceanic's body-measurement chart in front of us for every configuration, so send us your height, weight and torso length and we will confirm the size before you order rather than guessing from a shirt size.

What colors and sizes does the Oceanic Photon BCD come in?

The Photon is offered in Men's Black and Women's White. Sizes are combined ranges: XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL in the men's fit, and XS/S and M/L in the women's fit, for both the Photon Pro and the Photon Air. Lift varies by size and gender rather than rising with every size, so confirm the size before ordering. Send us your height, weight and torso length and we will help you choose.

What accessories work with the Oceanic Photon Pro and Photon Air?

Accessories are interchangeable across both configurations. Oceanic lists interchangeable color kits, utility pockets, a dive housing holster, a crotch strap and the TankTamer quick-adjust tank band as compatible with both the Photon Pro and the Photon Air. Because both models use the integrated modular attachment system, weight systems and add-ons carry over if you later change configurations.

How much ditchable and trim weight does the Photon Air hold?

The Photon Air uses a travel-optimized QLR4 weight system with 2 x 5 lb (2.3 kg) ditchable pockets plus 2 x 5 lb (2.3 kg) trim pockets. The Photon Pro doubles the ditchable side with 2 x 10 lb (4.5 kg) pockets plus 2 x 5 lb trim pockets, which suits thicker exposure suits.

What is A.P.S. on the Oceanic Photon?

A.P.S. stands for Adjustable Positioning System, Oceanic's method of tuning the Photon harness to your body. Combined with the modular, adjustable harness and independent harness positioning, it lets you set shoulder and torso placement for a personalized fit, and the men's and women's versions add gender-specific shoulder contours. It is part of both the Photon Pro and the Photon Air.

Really happy with this new BC!

Really happy with this new BC. I didn't want the wraparound style like I used as a student so many years ago. And travelling much more now supported continuing with the 'wing' direction. This has so much adjustability, I wonder if I can ever outgrow it. From northern Cal to Caribean sites, with all different types of wetsuits, and so much room for add-ons, hard to think I'd need anything different. I did get the Pro model because of the flexibility. Looking forward to taking it to Red Sea (as things settle over there) and I'm sure it will do a great job there as well. Looks well constructed.
