Product Information

The Oceanic Photon Air Women's BCD with Color Kit is a lightweight, packable back-inflation BCD built on a women's specific harness, offering 25 lb (11 kg) of lift in both XS/S and M/L, a 420D nylon 3D mesh harness and techno polymer hardware for low travel weight. It ships with an interchangeable color kit in your choice of White, Black, Blue, Aqua or Pink.

Who it is for

This is a BCD for the recreational diver who flies to her diving and wants minimal bulk in the bag, and for the local diver who prefers a clean back-inflate profile over a jacket style. The contoured women's shoulder harness and infinitely adjustable straps suit smaller frames and narrower shoulders, while the back-inflation wing keeps the chest clear and encourages a horizontal trim on reef, day-boat and travel dives.

Key details

  • Back-inflation wing with 25 lb (11 kg) lift in Women's XS/SM and MD/LG
  • 420D nylon with 3D mesh construction for quick drying and breathability

  • Two 5 lb ditchable weight pockets plus two 5 lb trim pockets, 20 lb (9 kg) total weight system capacity
  • Molded nylon shoulder and hip D-rings, replaceable inflator

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

How much lift does the women's Photon Air have?

The Photon Air Women's BCD provides 25 lb (11 kg) of lift in both the XS/SM and MD/LG sizes. That lift comes from a back-inflation wing, so the air cell sits entirely behind you and keeps the chest clear. It is intended for recreational, travel and local diving, and the integrated weight system holds up to 20 lb (9 kg) total.

How much weight can the Photon Air carry?

The weight system holds 20 lb (9 kg) total: two 5 lb ditchable pockets and two 5 lb trim pockets for balancing your trim. The two 5 lb ditchable pockets let you drop weight if needed, so practice the release before you dive.

What is the difference between the Photon Air and the Photon Pro?

The Photon Air is the lighter, travel-focused version of the Photon platform, using techno polymer hardware and a techno polymer tank band, while the Photon Pro uses stainless steel hardware for higher lift and more rugged use. Both share the same modular component interface, so color kits and Photon accessories are cross-compatible between the two models.

Which size should I choose, XS/S or M/L?

The Photon Air Women's BCD comes in two sizes, XS/S and M/L, both rated at 25 lb (11 kg) of lift. Each one uses an infinitely adjustable harness so you fine-tune the shoulders and waist for your frame. If you are between the two sizes, contact DiveCatalog and we will walk through your measurements and exposure suit.

Review summary

5.0 74 ratings across the web

Reviewers agree the fit runs true to size and the build quality holds up, with one diver at 5 feet 6 inches and 133 pounds reporting a perfect fit. Both the adjustability and the back-inflate wing design drew praise, with one reviewer using it from northern California to the Caribbean across different wetsuit thicknesses and noting plenty of room for add-ons. Good to know: the color kit arrives separately and you install it yourself, and the BCD is heavier than some travelers expect. It suits women who want an adjustable wing-style BC with a custom color look.

Great BCD

Fit perfectly and I'm 5'6 133lbs. The color kit came separately, and we had to switch the color ourselves which was a pain but once we changed all the color it's so cute! I wish I can change the color pad on the straps as well though. High-quality material, although not as light as I would like since I ordered this for traveling. DiveCatalog shipped my order super fast as always! Got it in within 2 days
