Product Information

The Halcyon Standard Single Tank System in this configuration is a modular backplate and wing buoyancy system for recreational and technical single-cylinder diving, built around a stainless steel backplate, a black Era BC wing with 30 lb (14 kg) of lift, Halcyon's infinitely adjustable Secure Harness and a stainless steel single tank adapter with two cam straps and tank grip.

Who it is for

This set suits divers who want one harness-based platform for recreational single-tank dives and for technical training foundations, and who prefer assembling, adjusting and maintaining their own gear rather than using a jacket BCD. The 30 lb (14 kg) Era wing is sized for single-cylinder use. The stainless steel backplate is Halcyon's upgrade option in place of the standard aluminum plate. Travel divers can pack the system down, since it ships in a Halcyon Traverse bag.

Key details

  • Era BC wing, 30 lb (14 kg) lift, black
  • Stainless steel backplate (the upgrade option in Halcyon's Standard Single Cylinder BC System configurator; aluminum is the standard choice)
  • Secure Harness, infinitely adjustable, with the Cinch Quick-Adjust system offered as an upgrade
  • Stainless steel single tank adapter with two cam straps and tank grip; weighted and carbon fiber STA upgrades exist
  • Inflator with a 52 cm / 22 in LP hose

Compatibility and sizing

Halcyon's aluminum backplate is offered in standard, long and small sizes, and the Era wing is available in 30 lb (14 kg) or 40 lb (18 kg) lift, with Eclipse wings in 20 lb (9 kg), 30 lb (14 kg) or 40 lb (18 kg). The system accepts ACB10 weight pockets rated to 4 kg / 10 lb, trim weight pockets and the MC Storage Pak, and full color and branding personalization is available through the Halcyon Customize Tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

Is a 30 lb wing enough lift for single-tank diving?

The Era BC wing in this system provides 30 lb (14 kg) of lift, which is one of the two Era lift options Halcyon publishes for single-cylinder use, alongside 40 lb (18 kg). Halcyon also offers Eclipse wings in 20 lb (9 kg), 30 lb (14 kg) and 40 lb (18 kg). If you dive heavy steel cylinders or thick exposure protection, call us and we can talk through the lift and backplate choice.

What is the difference between the stainless steel and aluminum backplate?

Halcyon's Standard Single Cylinder BC System ships with an aluminum backplate in its base configuration, and the stainless steel plate is an upgrade option selected in Halcyon's Customize Tool. This listing is the stainless steel version. Halcyon lists the aluminum backplate in standard, long and small sizes; the stainless steel plate is the upgrade material option.

Can I add integrated weight pockets to this Halcyon system?

Yes. The Standard Single Tank System is compatible with Halcyon ACB10 weight pockets, which hold up to 4 kg / 10 lb, and with trim weight pockets for fine tuning balance. A MC Storage Pak can also be fitted. Weight pockets are not part of the base package, so add them separately if you want ditchable weight on the harness rather than on a belt.

Does the system come with a hose and a bag?

Yes. The package includes an inflator with a 52 cm / 22 in low-pressure hose, the stainless steel single tank adapter with two cam straps and tank grip, and a Halcyon Traverse bag for transport and storage. The wing, stainless steel backplate and Secure Harness make up the rest of the set. A regulator, cylinder and weights are not included.
