Product Information

The Aqua Lung Axiom i3+ Women's BCD is a weight-integrated jacket style BCD built on a women's specific pattern, and it replaces the usual inflator button and dump valves with the i3 lever: a single lever on the left hip that raises to inflate and lowers to vent air from all three exhaust points at once. It is built from 420 denier nylon with the Wrapture harness, SureLock II integrated weight pockets and the GripLock tank band.

Who it is for

This BCD suits women divers who want stable, upright jacket style buoyancy control with simplified single lever inflation and deflation. The shortened shape and scalloped sides take pressure off the hips, and the Wrapture harness holds the tank close to your center of gravity so you can stand and walk upright with a cylinder on. Because the i3 lever dumps from all exhaust points together, you never have to hunt for a dump valve or lift the inflator hose.

Key details

  • i3+ lever inflation and deflation, small or large bursts on the way up, all exhaust valves open on the way down
  • Wrapture harness with ultra thin backplate and swiveling shoulder buckles
  • SureLock II integrated weight pockets release mechanically with one smooth pull; see size chart for weight capacity
  • Lift capacity is size specific; call 888-701-4017 to confirm the lift rating for your size
  • Two zippered pockets, six stainless steel and two plastic D-rings
  • GripLock tank band with macro presets and a finger saving cam
  • Bladder retraction system to reduce drag during deflation

Compatibility and sizing

This Black / Red colorway is offered in 2XS, XS/S, M and ML. The GripLock tank band secures the cylinder with macro presets and a finger-saving cam.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a scuba BCD fit?

A BCD should fit snugly enough that it does not ride up toward your ears when inflated, while still letting you breathe fully. Fasten the waist and cummerbund first, then adjust the shoulder straps so the tank sits close to your back and the shoulders cannot slide off. With the BCD fully inflated at the surface you should still be able to take a deep, comfortable breath; if it squeezes your chest, loosen it or move up a size.

How do I rinse and care for a BCD after diving?

Rinse the outside in fresh water and also flush the inside of the bladder, because salt water gets in through the inflator and dump valves. Fill the bladder roughly a third full of fresh water through the oral inflator, slosh it around, then drain it out through the inflator and each dump valve. Hang it to dry out of direct sunlight and store it partially inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Should I use integrated weights or a weight belt?

Integrated weight pockets carry the lead in the BCD itself, which many divers find more comfortable and easier on the hips, while a weight belt keeps the weight independent of your BCD. Either way, you must be able to release your ditchable weight quickly with one hand, and your buddy should know how your system releases. Non-ditchable trim pockets are useful for balance but should never hold weight you might need to drop.

How do I pack a BCD for travel?

Make sure the BCD is completely dry inside and out before packing so it does not mildew in transit. Remove all weights, deflate it fully, and fold or roll it around softer items such as a wetsuit to cushion the inflator and valves. Avoid hard creases in the air cell, and unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive.

When does a BCD need to be serviced?

Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual, which is commonly an annual inspection alongside the rest of your life-support gear. Have the inflator, dump valves, and bladder checked any time the inflator sticks, free-flows, feels rough, or the BCD holds air poorly. Between services, confirm that it inflates and deflates properly as part of every pre-dive check.

What is the difference between a jacket-style and a back-inflate BCD?

A jacket-style BCD holds air in panels that wrap around your sides as well as your back, while a back-inflate BCD keeps the entire air cell behind you. Jacket styles tend to feel very stable and upright at the surface, and back-inflate styles keep the chest clear and are often preferred for horizontal trim underwater. Neither is objectively better, so treat it as a fit and preference decision and try both if you can.

Will my BCD fit any scuba tank?

Most recreational BCDs use an adjustable cam band sized for common single-cylinder diameters, so standard aluminum and steel tanks generally work. Re-check the band tension after the first wetting, because webbing can relax slightly and let the tank shift. If you dive doubles or unusual cylinder diameters, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before assuming it will hold.

How does the i3+ lever work on the Axiom i3+?

The i3+ system puts inflation and deflation on one lever at the left hip. Pulling the lever up inflates the BCD in small or large bursts, and pushing it down opens all the exhaust valves at once so air vents without changing your body position. There is no need to locate a specific dump valve or raise the inflator hose to release air.

How much lift does each size of the Axiom i3+ Women's BCD have?

Lift varies by size. Choose the size that fits your torso first, then call 888-701-4017 to confirm lift for your exposure suit and cylinder.

How much weight can the SureLock II pockets hold?

The SureLock II pockets snap in with an audible click and release with one smooth pull; call 888-701-4017 for weight capacity by size.

What sizes and color does this Axiom i3+ listing cover?

This listing is the Black / Red colorway of the Aqua Lung Axiom i3+ Women's BCD in sizes 2XS, XS/S, M and ML. Each size has its own lift rating, so compare the lift figures along with torso fit. If you are between sizes, contact our Irvine, California shop and we can walk you through the fit.

Review summary

4.7 27 ratings across the web

Reviewers consistently praise the i3 lever system, saying the single side-mounted control makes inflating and deflating simple and keeps a hose out of their face. Comfort gets repeated mentions, on land carrying a tank and at depth, along with secure tank attachment and easy-to-reach pockets and D-rings. Buoyancy control and surface position are described as easy to manage. Integrated weights add some bulk, and one long-term diver reported durability trouble. It suits recreational divers who want intuitive, hands-free buoyancy control and a comfortable fit.

What reviewers like

Comfortable in the water and carrying a tank
Easy, predictable buoyancy control at depth
Clips, D-rings and pockets for lights and gear
Lowering the i3 lever dumps air from all three exhaust points
