Product Information
The Garmin Varia UT800 Smart Headlight Urban Edition is a handlebar-mounted bike headlight that puts out up to 800 lumens on high, runs five light modes and is visible in daylight from more than 1 mile away. It is the Urban Edition, so it ships with a universal out-front mount rather than the helmet mount found on the Trail Edition, and it carries an IPX7 water rating.
Who it is for
This is a light for riders who share the road with traffic: commuters, early-morning and after-dark road cyclists, and anyone who wants to be seen at junctions as well as straight ahead. The 270 degree viewing angle spreads light to the sides, and the day flash mode is built for daylight visibility rather than lighting the pavement. Riders who prefer a helmet-mounted beam should look at the Trail Edition instead.

- Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with up to 1 year of standby life.
- IEC 60529 IPX7 water rating; operating range -15° to 50°C (5° to 122°F).

Compatibility and sizing
Pair the Varia UT800 with a compatible Garmin Edge cycling computer over ANT+ bike light control and the light automatically adjusts beam intensity to changing ambient light, your speed and the ride profile. You can also switch it on or off and change brightness from a compatible Edge device or a dedicated remote. The light does not conform to StVZO regulations, so check your local road-lighting laws before riding.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Varia UT800 Urban Edition and the Trail Edition?
The difference is the mount included. The Urban Edition ships with a universal out-front mount for handlebar mounting, while the Trail Edition ships with a helmet friction mount instead. The headlight itself is the same, with the same five light modes, 800 lumen maximum output, IPX7 water rating and ANT+ bike light control.
How long does the Varia UT800 battery last?
Run time depends on the mode. The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery gives up to 1.5 hours at 800 lumens on high, up to 3 hours at 400 lumens on medium, up to 6 hours at 200 lumens on low, up to 6 hours in night flash (100 to 300 lumens) and up to 25 hours in day flash (700 lumens). Standby life is up to 1 year.
Can the Varia UT800 adjust brightness automatically?
Yes, when it is paired with a compatible Garmin Edge cycling computer over ANT+ bike light control. In that setup the light automatically adjusts beam intensity to changing ambient light conditions, your speed and the ride profile. You can also turn it on or off and change brightness manually from a compatible Edge device or a dedicated remote.
Is the Varia UT800 waterproof, and is it legal for road use?
The Varia UT800 carries an IEC 60529 IPX7 water rating, so rain and wet road riding are not a problem. Operating temperature range is -15 to 50 degrees C (5 to 122 degrees F). Garmin notes that the light does not conform to StVZO regulations, so check your local road-lighting laws before using it on public roads.
