Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need my own dive computer?

A dive computer tracks the actual depth and time profile you have dived and the tissue loading that follows from it, which is personal to you. A rented computer has no record of your recent diving, and swapping models each trip means relearning the display and menus when you should be focused on the dive. Owning one you know well is a genuine safety and comfort improvement.

Can two divers share one dive computer?

No. A computer only tracks the profile of the diver actually wearing it, and even buddies who stay together do not follow identical depth and time profiles. Every diver needs their own computer, and passing one between divers or between dives is unsafe.

What does conservatism mean on a dive computer?

Conservatism settings make the computer's calculations more cautious, shortening allowed bottom times and adding margin beyond the base algorithm. Divers commonly add conservatism for factors such as cold, hard work, fatigue, or repetitive multi-day diving. How and when to adjust it is covered by your training and your computer's manual, so set it before you get in the water and follow what your computer tells you during the dive.

What kind of battery does a dive computer use?

Broadly there are two types: user-replaceable batteries, often a coin cell that you or a shop swap along with resealing an o-ring, and sealed rechargeable batteries that charge from a cable or dock. Neither is universally better, as replaceable cells are convenient on remote trips while rechargeables avoid ever opening the case. Follow the manual exactly for any battery change, because an improperly seated o-ring or case is the usual cause of a flooded computer.

Do I need to do anything special for altitude diving or flying after diving?

Yes, both change the picture, and both are governed by your training agency's guidance and your computer's instructions rather than any casual rule of thumb. Many computers have an altitude setting that must be configured before diving at elevation, and most display a no-fly or surface-interval countdown after a dive. Follow your computer and your training, and ask a dive professional or a dive-medicine specialist if you are unsure.

How do I care for a dive computer?

Rinse it in fresh water after every dive day, paying attention to the buttons and around any sensor openings where salt crystals form, and let it dry fully before storing. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun and extreme heat, and avoid pressing buttons while sand is on the case. Inspect the strap or bungee often, because a failed strap loses far more computers than a failed computer does.

What is the difference between wrist, console, and air-integrated dive computers?

A wrist computer is worn like a watch and read by raising your arm, while a console computer sits at the end of a hose with your other gauges. Air integration means the computer also displays cylinder pressure, either through a hose or from a wireless transmitter on the first stage, and often estimates remaining gas time. All of them run a decompression algorithm, so the real difference is where you read the information and how much of it you get.

This dive computer offers comprehensive features for recreational and technical divers with a large, bright, color display that's "easy to read underwater." Customers praised its durability, rechargeable battery, and intuitive interface. However, some noted the software needs improvement and concerns about algorithm customization for technical diving.

Has every function a diver can wish for

I am an advanced open water diver and have been diving since 1990. Have experience with several brands including Oceanic, Aeris and Suunto. This watch has every function a diver can hope for. Large display but doesn't get in the way. Logical, simple to use.

,,,,,,,,,,I love the embedded navigation.

,,,,,,,,,,Screen can be too dim in bright sunlight. Never an issue for me under water

Snarky Com Divers.

I’ve been a commercial diver (broke out) for 10 years and I can tell you that this computer is everything it claims to be. Which is an adaptable and durable computer for recreation diving (tech and cave included). For no reason should a wrist computer be used or expected to function in conjunction with SurDO2 dives. You can’t wear the computer in the chamber (shouldn’t) and the SUUNTO tables and algorithm are not the same as the DIECM tables we surface dive with. What are you going to do anyway? Yell at your sea daddy to stop the bell because your wrist watch says you need to stop? Get bent like the rest of us. Stick to your GShock and time ascent.

,,,,,,,,,,This is a fantastic computer when used as designed. It syncs and stays synced. The new software is much better than 3 was. Screen clarity is on a whole other level compared to other computers. The strap fits around drysuit and thick cuffs. The ability to set the display layout makes it feel more like a HUD than I computer screen. Just passing glances provide you all the information you need. Rechargeable battery? What a game changer. I’ve got a week of diving out of it and I dive A LOT. I’ve got over 1500 dives on this computer and it’s been flawless every time.

,,,,,,,,,,Suunto. If you ever need someone to demo your gear or give you professional feedback, I’m more than willing.

Amazing computer!

I work as a commercial diver on the west coast of Canada doing hundreds of survey dives each year to collect data. My dive computer is my lifeline and the Suunto Eon Steel has been absolutely great. I've done up to two weeks of diving on a single charge. The battery life is excellent. The display is big, clear and easy to read. I've paired it with a Suunto Pod transmitter and it has been reliable every dive. Over all I'd highly recommend this computer to all levels of divers. #reviewtowin

Great computer!

I've had many other top brand name dive computers, this is one of the best so far. Built super tough, easy menu system, bright clear display. Uploads are easy, software is straightforward. Couldn't be happier.

Love the computer but the software is poor in my opinion

I have had this computer now for a few years and love the display, what is does for me as an instructor and ADP diver with several nitrox mixes. I like the bungee mount to.

,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,I have for a long time despised with a passion the software. I do not want to go online looking for other divers logs or indeed have mine on there either. I also at times dive without the eon and cannot find a way to add a manual dive on my software??

,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,The worst of all is that with DM3 you could add and see all the extra bits of info without all this Tag nonsense and its now difficult to use. In comparison to other software this is just pants. The computer however is great

Unfortunately, not fully customizable as it's sold

I am a commercial diver and I bought this because it was called a fully customizable experience.

,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,Turned out to be useless for my line of work since we make Surface Decompression, or bell diving, and this computer is not a costumizable enough to allow it.

,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,I wanted some extra protection against decompression, and not only that but send this data to Suunto and the world so you guys can understand better diving than what you do now; that turned out to be impossible.

,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,In paper it all seemed beautiful, under some more serious diving ( I am sorry technical divers) it became a thousand dollar paper weight in top of my desk.

Best Dive Computer I have Owned!

I love my new EON Steel. Easy to use, Easy to program. Nice bright screen that is easy to read. Provides lots of information at your fingers tips during the dive and in the logs after the dive. Feels a little big out of the water but you do not even notice once in the water. Hard to complain about it being large when you see the easy to read screen. This is the best Dive Computer I have owned in 20+ years of diving.

Very nice product

Suunto is a user-friendly product but in my opinion they should revise their algorithm lock in case of omitted decompression stop and recalculate a second acceptable solution rather than giving up on the divee

Perfect Computer for Any Active Diver

I'm a Master Instructor and consequently I dive a lot. This is the first dive computer I have come across that can keep up with my pace. It's durability is unmatched and it sports a decompression algorithm that keeps me safe without keeping me out of the water. It's a little thing but I especially love that the stopwatch function is accessible in dive mode. As an instructor, I often have to time skills and this is the first computer that has allowed me to do that while still being able to monitor my dive. I can't recommend this product enough to anyone who is an active diver!

Very nice dive computer but there is more to be done

In total it's very nice computer with large display, lots of functionalities, customizable displays and so on.

,,,,,,,,,,Nevertheless, considering this as a technical diving feasible computer, there must be a way to use ingredients or different RGBM algorithm. Suunto Fused RGBM for maximizing dive time which is the used algorithm is totally misleading information. Previous Sunnto RGBM algorithms calculate longer dive times under equal other conditions.

This is a great dive computer which covers all aspects of diving from pleasure diving to technica...

i have had the EON Steel now for nearly 2 years and the battery lasts well and all the features are well presented. I have all the info i need both underwater and on the surface and its very easy to look back at previous logged dives. The Computer is a bit conservative but that is good keeping you as safe as possible

Zeer tevreden.
