Product Information

The Mares Force-X LS is a low volume bi-lens dive mask built around a stainless steel frame and a LiquidSkin bi-silicone skirt, making it a good match for divers who want a durable frame, a soft sealing skirt and a wide field of vision. It accepts optical correction lenses and uses a quick lens exchange system, and it is offered in six color combinations.

Who it is for

This mask suits scuba divers who want a slim, low volume bi-lens profile, plus the option of prescription lenses down the road. The bi-lens layout and Force-X Fit system are aimed at divers who want an ergonomic, secure seal, and the quick lens exchange is useful if you dive often, need visual aids, or want to deep clean the inside of the lenses.

Key details

  • Skirt: LiquidSkin technology, two silicone types combined for comfort and a flexible seal.
  • Frame: durable integrated stainless steel frame with a flat profile.
  • Lenses: bi-lens, low volume, with a wide field of vision.
  • Lens retention: quick lens exchange using quick-release metal clips.
  • Fit: Force-X Fit with a Y-shaped buckle and slim adjustable buckles.
  • Strap: anatomical silicone strap.

Compatibility and sizing

The Force-X LS is compatible with optical and prescription lenses per Mares, and the quick lens exchange system lets lenses be replaced quickly if damaged. Color choices are Blue/Black, Dark Grey/Black, Olive/Black, Orange/Black, White/Aqua and Yellow Fluo/Black.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a dive mask fits?

Hold the mask against your face without using the strap, look slightly down, and inhale gently through your nose; a well-fitting mask holds itself in place for a few seconds. Check that the skirt seals all the way around without digging into the nose bridge, and that there are no gaps at the temples or above the upper lip. A mustache can break the seal even on an otherwise well-fitting mask.

Why does my brand new mask fog no matter what I do?

New masks carry a residue on the inside of the lens left over from manufacturing, and defog cannot stick to it, so the mask fogs until that film is removed. The standard pre-treatment is to scrub the inside of the lens with a mild abrasive cleaner or a dedicated mask prep and rinse thoroughly, repeating if it still fogs. Follow the mask manufacturer's instructions, particularly on coated or mirrored lenses.

How do I stop my dive mask from fogging?

Apply defog to a dry lens before the dive, spread it over the whole inner surface, then rinse briefly with water just before you put the mask on. Fogging happens when warm moist air meets a cooler lens, so a clean lens with a thin surfactant film is the fix. Keep sunscreen off your fingers before handling the inside of the lens, because that film fogs badly and is hard to remove.

Why do dive masks need tempered glass?

Dive mask lenses should be tempered safety glass because it resists scratching and, if it ever does break, fractures into blunt granules rather than sharp shards next to your eyes. Untempered or plastic lenses scratch easily and can craze, which is why tempered glass is standard on scuba masks. Look for the tempered marking etched on the lens.

Can I get a dive mask with my prescription?

Yes, prescription options are widely available, usually as masks fitted with stock corrective lenses in set diopter steps, custom-ground lenses installed in compatible frames, or bonded lenses added to an existing lens. Not every mask frame accepts replacement lenses, so check compatibility before you buy the frame. An optician or a dive shop can help translate your glasses prescription into a mask lens choice.

How should I care for and store a dive mask?

Rinse it in fresh water after each dive day and let it dry away from direct sunlight, avoiding anything abrasive on the treated inner lens. Store it in a rigid mask box so the skirt is never compressed or creased, since a set crease in the skirt is a permanent leak. Keep silicone skirts away from petroleum products and prolonged UV, both of which yellow and harden them.

How tight should a dive mask strap be?

Not tight at all in the usual sense, because over-tightening is the most common cause of both leaks and headaches; a hard-pulled strap distorts the skirt and lifts the seal off your face. The strap should sit high on the back of your head and be just firm enough to keep the mask from shifting. If you need it cranked down to stop a leak, the mask does not fit your face.

Can the lenses on the Mares Force-X LS be changed?

Yes. The Force-X LS uses a quick lens exchange system with quick-release metal clips, so the bi-lens design lets you replace a lens quickly if one is damaged and makes it easier to clean the inside surfaces thoroughly. Mares also lists the mask as compatible with optical correction lenses, so visual aids can be fitted in place of the standard lenses.

What makes LiquidSkin different from a standard silicone mask skirt?

LiquidSkin combines two different types of silicone in one skirt. The result is a skirt that combines stability and flexibility for a comfortable, flexible seal, which is what Mares credits for the fit and sealing performance of the Force-X LS. Paired with the Force-X Fit system and Y-shaped buckle, strap pressure is distributed evenly for a secure fit.

Why does the Force-X LS use a stainless steel frame?

The Force-X LS has an integrated stainless steel frame with a flat profile. Stainless steel gives the mask a durable structure that supports the low volume bi-lens layout and expansive field of vision. The integrated flat profile gives the mask a streamlined shape that helps reduce drag and leakage.

What colors does the Mares Force-X LS come in?

Six color combinations are available: Blue/Black, Dark Grey/Black, Olive/Black, Orange/Black, White/Aqua and Yellow Fluo/Black.

Review summary

4.4 10 ratings across the web

Reviewers consistently describe this as a light mask that sits flat against the face, with several noting it holds position well on dives. Comments on comfort and overall quality are positive across both sources. One reviewer with a different face shape got water entry along the sides, so trying the fit before a trip is worth doing. A good pick for divers who want a low-profile mask.
