Product Information

The OMS SlipStream Monoprene Fin is an open-heel technical diving fin molded from Monoprene, a neutrally buoyant injection-molded thermoplastic elastomer, with two flow channels in the blade and stainless steel spring straps included on every pair. It is built for divers who need a lightweight fin that holds trim instead of pulling the legs down, and it comes in black in sizes M to 2XL.

Who it is for

This fin suits technical, cave and wreck divers who use the frog kick and modified kicks in overhead environments, where precise trim matters. Because the Monoprene material is neutrally buoyant, the fin sits where the diver places it rather than forcing continuous trim correction, and the lightweight design helps reduce leg cramps and fatigue on long dives. OMS also notes the low environmental impact of the material, which makes the SlipStream a sensible choice in sensitive marine areas. Recreational divers who want a no-fuss fin for drysuit or thick-bootie diving will get the same benefits.

Key details

  • Neutrally buoyant Monoprene injection-molded thermoplastic elastomer construction
  • Two flow channels molded into the blade to direct water and increase propulsion
  • Maximum thrust on the down kick with minimal resistance on the up kick
  • Covered stainless steel spring heel straps included, with a nylon sleeve to prevent pinching
  • Total fin length 21 in with a 13 in blade
  • 5.3 lb (2.4 kg) dry per XL pair

Compatibility and sizing

The SlipStream is an open-heel fin, so size it around the dive boot or drysuit boot you actually wear. Sizes offered are M (Medium), L (Large), XL (X-Large) and 2XL (2X-Large), listed by OMS as M, L, XL and XXL. The spring straps tension automatically over a drysuit boot or thick bootie, so there is no buckle to adjust with cold or gloved hands.

What's in the box

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between open-heel and full-foot fins?

Open-heel fins have an adjustable heel strap and are worn with dive boots, which protect your feet on shore entries and add warmth. Full-foot fins slip on like a shoe against bare skin or a thin sock, and are typically lighter and easier to pack. Most scuba divers choose open-heel fins with boots, while full-foot fins suit warm water, snorkeling, and pool use.

How should scuba fins fit?

Open-heel fins should be sized around the boots you will actually wear, snug with the strap set so your heel stays seated and your foot does not slide forward in the pocket. Full-foot fins should fit like a firm shoe, with no heel lift, no pinched toes, and no gap that lets water pump in and out. Too loose causes heel blisters and lost fins in current, and too tight causes foot cramps.

Should I buy dive boots before fins?

Choose your boots first and size open-heel fins around them, because sole thickness changes the foot-pocket size you need. A thin warm-water boot and a thick cold-water boot with a rugged sole can easily be a fin size apart. If you already own fins, bring them along when you buy boots so you can check the combination.

Are spring straps worth it?

Spring straps replace the adjustable rubber strap with a stainless spring that stretches on and off, so there is nothing to buckle with cold or gloved hands and no rubber strap to perish and snap mid-dive. They hold constant tension, which many divers find more comfortable and consistent. They are sized rather than adjustable, so match the length to your foot pocket and the boots you dive.

What are the best fins for travel?

For travel, length and weight matter most, so shorter blades and travel-specific open-heel or full-foot models pack more easily and save baggage allowance. Some fins have removable blades or compact foot pockets designed for luggage. Pack fins along the outside walls of your bag, where they also act as protection for softer gear.

What is the difference between paddle and split fins?

Paddle fins use a solid blade that transfers power directly, which many divers prefer for precision, control in current, and non-flutter kicks such as the frog kick. Split fins have a slit down the blade that lets water pass through, which generally makes flutter kicking easier on the legs but gives up some control and works less well with other kick styles. Neither is inherently better, so let your kick style, leg strength, and conditions decide, and try both if you get the chance.

How do I care for dive fins?

Rinse them in fresh water after each dive day, paying attention to buckles, springs, and strap channels where salt collects, and dry them out of direct sunlight. Store them flat or hanging from the foot pocket rather than standing on the blade tips, which can take a permanent bend. Check straps, buckles, and any screws before every trip, since a failed buckle is the most common fin problem.

Are the OMS SlipStream fins negatively buoyant?

No. The SlipStream is molded from Monoprene, a neutrally buoyant injection-molded thermoplastic elastomer, so the fin stays where the diver places it. A negative fin tends to pull the legs down and forces continuous trim correction, while a neutral fin helps the diver hold horizontal position. The lightweight construction also helps reduce leg cramps and fatigue over long dives.

Do OMS SlipStream fins come with spring straps?

Yes. Every pair of SlipStream fins includes covered stainless steel spring heel straps with a nylon sleeve that prevents pinching. There is no buckle to adjust, so the straps tension automatically over a drysuit boot or a thick bootie and can be donned with cold or gloved hands. No separate strap purchase is needed.

What sizes and colors does the OMS SlipStream come in?

The SlipStream is offered in black in four sizes: M (Medium), L (Large), XL (X-Large) and 2XL (2X-Large), which OMS lists as M, L, XL and XXL. Because it is an open-heel fin, size it around the boots you will actually dive, since sole thickness changes the foot-pocket size you need.

How heavy and how long are the OMS SlipStream fins?

An XL pair weighs 5.3 lb (2.4 kg) dry, and the fin measures 21 in in total length with a 13 in blade. The 13 in blade and lightweight neutrally buoyant material suit frog kicks and modified kicks in overhead environments.

Powerful!

First set of new fins since my original Hollis F-2’s and these did not disappoint! They are so much more powerful and more comfortable on my feet. My only complaint is getting them on and off is a struggle. Disappointing you have to pay extra for the finger loop attachment for the spring strap, should come standard. I made my own Paracord pull and it worked okay for a week of shore diving in Bonaire.
