Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need my own dive computer?

A dive computer tracks the actual depth and time profile you have dived and the tissue loading that follows from it, which is personal to you. A rented computer has no record of your recent diving, and swapping models each trip means relearning the display and menus when you should be focused on the dive. Owning one you know well is a genuine safety and comfort improvement.

Can two divers share one dive computer?

No. A computer only tracks the profile of the diver actually wearing it, and even buddies who stay together do not follow identical depth and time profiles. Every diver needs their own computer, and passing one between divers or between dives is unsafe.

What does conservatism mean on a dive computer?

Conservatism settings make the computer's calculations more cautious, shortening allowed bottom times and adding margin beyond the base algorithm. Divers commonly add conservatism for factors such as cold, hard work, fatigue, or repetitive multi-day diving. How and when to adjust it is covered by your training and your computer's manual, so set it before you get in the water and follow what your computer tells you during the dive.

What kind of battery does a dive computer use?

Broadly there are two types: user-replaceable batteries, often a coin cell that you or a shop swap along with resealing an o-ring, and sealed rechargeable batteries that charge from a cable or dock. Neither is universally better, as replaceable cells are convenient on remote trips while rechargeables avoid ever opening the case. Follow the manual exactly for any battery change, because an improperly seated o-ring or case is the usual cause of a flooded computer.

Do I need to do anything special for altitude diving or flying after diving?

Yes, both change the picture, and both are governed by your training agency's guidance and your computer's instructions rather than any casual rule of thumb. Many computers have an altitude setting that must be configured before diving at elevation, and most display a no-fly or surface-interval countdown after a dive. Follow your computer and your training, and ask a dive professional or a dive-medicine specialist if you are unsure.

How do I care for a dive computer?

Rinse it in fresh water after every dive day, paying attention to the buttons and around any sensor openings where salt crystals form, and let it dry fully before storing. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun and extreme heat, and avoid pressing buttons while sand is on the case. Inspect the strap or bungee often, because a failed strap loses far more computers than a failed computer does.

What is the difference between wrist, console, and air-integrated dive computers?

A wrist computer is worn like a watch and read by raising your arm, while a console computer sits at the end of a hose with your other gauges. Air integration means the computer also displays cylinder pressure, either through a hose or from a wireless transmitter on the first stage, and often estimates remaining gas time. All of them run a decompression algorithm, so the real difference is where you read the information and how much of it you get.

Air-integrated dive computer praised as "excellent in all categories" with easy-to-read displays and simple nitrox switching. Customers said it's "the best dive computer" they've used. Features compass and air integration. However, the protective screen scratches easily, Mac compatibility issues reported, and some found the manual unclear for beginners.

Excellent air-integrated dive computer

I prefer air-integrated dive computers for a variety of reasons - but that is for another time. This computer is excellent in all categories. The learning curve isn't steep, and switching from air to nitrox or from one nitrox percentage to another is a breeze. The displays are easy to read, both underwater and out. The plastic protective screen does scratch but I haven't noticed it preventing me from reading any display categories. I have over 500 dives under my belt and this is the best dive computer I have used. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Then it had accuracy issues with depth and stops.

Excellent all round computer

I recommend it. If I had to find a fault it would be that the bleeps are a little faint underwater.

,,,,,,,,,,Air integration is a brilliant feature and gives you accurate air time left readings. Nitrox levels are easily adjusted before dives. Robust case. Easy to read dial. It can also be used without the hose attached as a stand alone computer if you're travelling light and don't want to take your regs/hose on a dive trip.

A fantastic and convenient all-in-one dive computer - with a few niggles

It's an excellent all-in-one tool including a compass and air integration - conveniently all in one instrument. It does everything it's designed to do but it takes a few dives to familiarise with the functions and readouts and maybe I'm just a slow learner, but when you're underwater you can't refer back to the manual, although divers already familiar with the Suunto interface shouldn't have any issue. Due to my deteriorating eyesight - even with reader lenses in my dive mask - I struggle to read the smaller digits. For people with good eyesight, this won't be a problem.

,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,Cons: The plastic protective screen cover scratches very easily when your gear is being handled and is a nightmare to remove or insert. When it gets badly scratched, you will eventually have to change it to continue to clearly see the display - at your own cost and they're not cheap. The Cobra is attached to your first stage regulator with a hose, so you have to find a happy place for it where it's easy to reach. Standard hose clips are too wide to fit the thinner hose that's supplied with this computer. Most people will probably pass it through their BCD waist strap so it lies against the stomach but I find this position a little too short for quick and easy reach. I usually just leave it to dangle loose in front of me or hold it with my left hand but it's extra work making sure it doesn't fall by the wayside or dangle along underneath, damaging the reef below. I always dive with a big camera housing and I don't need the extra hassle of constantly worrying about where to place my computer.

,,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,In conclusion it's an excellent instrument and certainly other people whose bodies are built different to mine won't have the same positional or visual issues that I have. It works with my iMac but not particularly well and I really wish Suunto could fix that.

Awesome Dive Computer

This a great computer. I have used the Cobra 3 since 2008. And I have well over 100 dives logged on it. :) -- The display functions are easy to see while diving. It's easy to switch to compass mode or bookmark a location while diving. Pre-dive setting are easy to get to such as switch from AIR to Nitrox. And I love the fact that I can quickly disconnect and carry it to my room and download the data to my Windows 7-Vista-and Windows-10 computers.

,,,,,,,,,,I prefer the Suunto Dive Manager 3.1.0.216 over the Suunto DM4 software. The 3.1.0 Looks more professional and one can easily add personal information to the DIVE LOG, whereas the DM4 looks like some preschool app. And DM5 isn't any better. Difficult to use and Dive Log incomplete. BUT Back to the Suunto Cobra 3. This is an Awesome Dive Computer and I would recommend it to Beginner and Professional Technical as well. Five stars :) Chauncey-M 05/19/2017.

Awesome computer

I love this computer. It is so easy to use. Once you have it set up it is flawless. I have the disconnect, so I take my computer off and wash it separately post dive. I have over 100 dives with this, air and nitrox. I love that it is automatic, meaning it completes the safety stop if you are in 15 feet of water for some time at the end of the dive. I couldn't be happier with this computer. The dives transfer effortlessly when I connect it to my windows computer. It shows dive profile, fill at beginning of dive, air at end of dive. Air or nitrox. Very cool!

Not User Friendly

Cobra 3 is not intutive or user friendly.

,,,,,,,,,,Users manual is not clear, it is not written to help someone who knows nothing about this dive computer. This users manual ASSUMES the user knows how to operate the dive computer and knows the menue structure.

,,,,,,,,,,It may be a good product, but my out of the box impression/feeling is not good.
