The Suunto M-3 is the serious hiker's baseplate compass: premium needle on a jewel bearing, liquid-filled capsule, luminescent markings for pre-dawn starts, a baseplate magnifier, and — the feature that separates it from entry compasses — adjustable declination correction, so you set your local offset once and read true bearings directly.
Two versions: the M-3 NH is balanced for the northern hemisphere with metric and imperial map scales; the M-3 Global uses Suunto's globally balanced needle with a 20° tilt margin — it works on any continent and forgives an unlevel hand, and adds a clinometer for measuring slope angle. Both are made in Finland and carry Suunto's limited lifetime warranty.
