Atomic Aquatics

Atomic Aquatics — Before Atomic, There Was No Best

Dean Garraffa and Doug Toth had been designing innovative diving equipment since 1976 — generating groundbreaking patents for a major manufacturer before deciding they could do more on their own terms. In 1995, they founded Atomic Aquatics in Huntington Beach, California, with a mission stated in the brand's own words: passion, precision, and performance. In January 1997, they introduced the world's first titanium scuba regulator. Twenty-seven years later, the T3 is still manufactured and assembled in the USA at Atomic's own Atomica facility — machined from a single piece of titanium billet across 23 individual operations in a single continuous milling session.

The titanium choice wasn't aesthetic. Titanium is dramatically lighter than brass or stainless steel, essentially immune to saltwater corrosion (the alloy Atomic uses is rated to survive 300 years in seawater without rusting), and strong enough to handle the mechanical loads of a first stage without requiring excess material. The T3's combined first and second stage weighs under 1.8 pounds in the yoke version — a weight that enables genuinely comfortable travel to remote dive destinations where finding a qualified service technician is as unlikely as finding a hot meal.

Atomic Aquatics is now part of the Huish Outdoors family of brands. At DiveCatalog.com, we carry the current Atomic Aquatics lineup as an authorized dealer.

The Atomic Aquatics Product Range

Regulators

Z3 Regulator: Chrome-plated brass first stage with 316 stainless steel and titanium components, zirconium plating for corrosion resistance, and an optional factory-sealed version that protects against silt and sand contamination. A soft overmolded Rapid Adjustment Knob allows quick manual tuning, an elliptical exhaust valve reduces exhalation effort, and a dual-silicone comfort mouthpiece supports long-duration use. Nitrox-ready to 40% EAN. The hose uses Atomic's Comfort Swivel with Black PVD coating and a dual-material second-stage cover. Yoke version weighs 2.6 lbs.

B2 Regulator: The B2 pairs the proven Atomic second-stage design with a chrome-plated brass first stage, bringing near T2 performance into a more accessible brass package. Titanium components throughout, Automatic Flow Control (AFC) for depth-compensated breathing without manual adjustment, and the Comfort Swivel (30° range of motion, US Patent No. 7,188,869). Nitrox-ready to 40%. Available as a standalone regulator or as a complete set with Color Kit — colored mouthpiece, purge button cover, knob, and exhaust cover for visual identification during group diving.

SS1 Safe Second: A combined safe-second regulator and BCD inflator in a single unit. The patented Titanium Seat Saving Dynamic Orifice prevents wear on the low-pressure seat, extending service intervals. The Titanium lever connecting to the air supply will not rust or corrode. A flexible purge cover allows purge anywhere on its surface — not just at the center button. Compatible with EAN up to 50%. High-flow LP hose and disconnect interchangeable with other Atomic models.

Snorkels

The SV2 combines a Scupper Valve lower section with a semi-dry top, specifically designed for rough-water surface intervals where a purely semi-dry design lets too much water in and a fully dry design restricts airflow. The two-section engineering addresses both problems simultaneously.

Fins, Masks, and BCDs

Atomic extends the same materials and manufacturing precision into its fin, mask, and BCD lineup — Monel alloy for nitrox-safe components, titanium where weight and corrosion resistance matter, and CNC machining across all precision components.

Key Atomic Aquatics Technologies

AFC (Automatic Flow Control): A patented computer-designed airfoil inside the second stage mouthpiece, connected to a pressure-sensing diaphragm. The airfoil changes position in response to depth, automatically optimizing the Venturi effect without requiring the diver to turn a knob or push a button. The result is a regulator that breathes with a comfortable, natural feeling at any depth — not just at the depth it was manually adjusted for. (US Patent #5,678,541)

Comfort Swivel: A swivel mechanism between the second stage and the LP hose providing 30° of rotational movement in any direction without binding or kinking. Eliminates the jaw fatigue and positional discomfort that come from a hose that resists movement as you turn your head or change position underwater. (US Patent No. 7,188,869)

Titanium Seat Saving Dynamic Orifice (SS1): The orifice design in the SS1 that specifically prevents the low-pressure seat from wearing prematurely — a failure mode that causes increasing breathing resistance over time in standard second stages.

Atomica Manufacturing: Atomic's own CNC machining facility, where precision components are manufactured and assembled in the USA. This isn't outsourced manufacturing with final assembly in California — it's the actual production of critical components, in-house, under the same engineering oversight that designed them.

Frequently Asked Questions — Atomic Aquatics

What was the world's first titanium regulator?

Introduced by Atomic Aquatics in January 1997, it applied titanium — then primarily an aerospace and medical implant material — to scuba regulator components for the first time. The result was a first stage dramatically lighter and more corrosion-resistant than anything previously available, a standard Atomic has continued to refine across every generation since.

Do Atomic regulators really not need annual service?

Atomic's Limited Lifetime Warranty includes an extended 3-Year / 300-Dive service interval — not contingent on proof of annual service, an explicit departure from the standard dive industry approach. The extended interval is possible because titanium and corrosion-resistant materials degrade far more slowly than the brass and chrome components in conventional regulators, and because the factory-sealed option on select models prevents contamination that normally accelerates internal wear.

What is Monel and why does Atomic use it?

Monel is a nickel-copper alloy developed specifically for marine environments — as strong as steel with excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, and particularly suited for oxygen-enriched compressed air. The M1 regulator uses Monel components to accommodate oxygen mixes up to 80% when special guidelines are followed, making it Atomic's dedicated Nitrox/enriched air platform.

Is Atomic Aquatics actually made in the USA?

Yes. Atomic's critical components are CNC-machined and assembled at the Atomica facility in California. Atomic explicitly notes it does not manufacture for other brands, meaning the facility exists solely to produce Atomic's own products to their own quality standards.

Who founded Atomic Aquatics?

Dean Garraffa and Doug Toth founded the company in 1995, after nearly two decades designing diving equipment for a major manufacturer and generating numerous groundbreaking patents during that time. Atomic Aquatics is now part of the Huish Outdoors family of brands alongside Sherwood, Genesis, and Akona.
