Advanced Open Water Diver Course
The Advanced Open Water Diver course builds on your foundational scuba skills with additional training in a variety of diving activities. The program includes two mandatory dives—deep diving and underwater navigation—plus three additional specialty dives tailored to your interests and local conditions, totaling five dives. Each specialty dive can also count toward PADI® specialty certifications.
Specialty dive options include Deep, Digital Underwater Photography, Dive Against Debris, Dry Suit, Enriched Air Nitrox, Fish Identification, Night, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Search & Recovery, Underwater Naturalist, Underwater Navigation, and Wreck Diver. How to Become an Advanced Open Water Diver
The course begins with guidance on underwater navigation, deep diving, and three selected specialty dives. After practicing skills with a certified PADI Instructor, you will complete five open water dives. There is no exam, making the focus on skill development and enjoying your time underwater.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification allows divers to go deeper—up to 30 meters (100 feet)—and gain experience in different types of dives such as navigation, deep dives, or night dives. It builds on Open Water Diver skills and prepares divers for advanced courses. The course includes five dives: two mandatory (Deep Dive and Underwater Navigation) and three elective dives chosen with your instructor based on your interests. The course is designed to expand skills you already have. With two required dives and three electives, it focuses on building confidence and competence rather than testing difficulty. The two required dives are the Deep Dive, which allows you to reach up to 30 meters (100 feet) and practice buoyancy and air management at depth, and the Underwater Navigation Dive, which develops compass and natural navigation skills. Three additional dives can be chosen from a range of specialty options. Certified Advanced Open Water Divers can dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters (100 feet). To go deeper, additional training such as the PADI Deep Diver Specialty is required. You must hold an Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent), be at least 12 years old, and medically fit for diving. The course includes five open water dives: two mandatory (Deep and Navigation) and three electives, such as Wreck, Night, Peak Performance Buoyancy, or Drysuit. Learning is completed through e-learning modules, and upon certification, you can dive up to 30 meters (100 feet). Parental consent is needed for divers under 16. No. Open Water Divers can take the PADI Night Diver specialty course. Advanced Open Water is optional but can help build experience and confidence for night diving.
